Sounds normal to me. 
Think about it, how often do we tell our kids "Go see that guy. Now, go
sit on his lap, cuddle up to him and tell himw hat you want" And,
implied is that he knows who you are, where you live, and can come into
your house at night, when everybody is sleeping". 
That is pretty scary stuff when you think about it, because it goes
against everything we tell our kids the eleven months of the year. 
I wouldn't regard this as yoru daughter being "better next year" because
that puts a value on her behavior and on your expectations, which isn't
fair to either of you, least of all her. 
If you want to try again next year, try again, if not, don't.

hi everyone.  I just had a question for anyone that knows.  
I took my 17 month old daughter to see Santa at the mall last week.
Last year, she was very small, but she went right to him, and ssat on
his lap.  This year, however, she was fine watching other kids with
Santa, but when I tried to have her sit on his lap, she started
screaming and grabbed on to my shirt.  I know about stranger anxiety,
and for the most part, Mackenzie's pretty quick to warm up to most, but
she didn't want to have anything to do with him.  I was wondering if
this was a typical age for her to be scared, and will she be better next
year? Thanks for any help.
