Listening is great, but I really think it is important for our children to
see the words on the page.  When Gab was little I would read her many books
and she would look at the pictures.  I would stop and ask her if she could
find a certain word- maybe dog, cat, fish.  I would say, can you see a d, o,
g.   Gab is now a great speller and reading 7th grade level and she is only
9.

This is a great point.  I think a lot of kids enjoy listening to stories
that are above the level they can actually read.  I'm not saying read your
child War And Peace, but I think it is OK to try books slightly above what
you think they might enjoy just to see if they like them.  If not, no harm
done.  If so, then you're really helping them gain vocabulary and a love tof
reading and stories.

My public library has recorded books which I am using with my six year old.
I have to get the children's librarian to help me select books.    My son is
really enjoying listening to books several grades above his actual level.
And he likes looking at the art work on the front cover of the tapes or cds.
