I would also tell her that if she had told the truth to begin with, the 
punishment wouldn't have been quite so bad.  A few months ago, the day of 
her birthday, no less, my daughter left the house withoug telling anyone 
where she was going.  I had gone to the store to get some party things for 
later on that day.  I found out about it when i got home, and if it hadn't 
been for the fact that it was only an hour before the party, and that some 
of the guests had other plans the following weekend, we would have cancelled 
the party.  We ended up grounding her for a week, especially because of the 
danger factor involved.  Come to think of it, you could let her go on the 
trip and ground her; school, home, no extras.  Let me know how it goes. 
It's tough raising kids on your own.
