Hello all,

I just joined the list and wanted to introduce myself.

My husband and I live in Kalamazoo, MI. We are both totally blind, and have custody of his son Deven. Deven is sighted, and I'm looking for other parents who can share experiences with raising a sighted child, and help me to learn to be the best mom I can be.

Deven also has ADHD and some emotional challenges, so I want to try to develop my own coping mechanisms, as well as help him learn and grow. Deven is in a special Ed setting of sorts, and is nearly ready to move out of that setting into general classes. One of the things I would like to do is begin reading with him. At this time he has no homework, and I think it would be a good idea if we started working together on different subjects at home so he can accept the idea of one day being expected to have and do homework once he is in a regular classroom setting.

So I will be looking for input on how best to work with him on things like times tables and reading along with him. I realize some of this is quite obvious, but parenting is new to me, and I confess I'm looking for reassurance and support.
