Yeah, I found that interesting too.
I also found that when our daughter slept in the same room with us, I
woke up at *every* sound she made and she woke up meaning we were all
exhausted come morning.
My husband is a heavy sleeper and I was not comfortable having him in
bed with us the few times my daughter and I coslept. I don't think he
cared, he was just happy to get some sleep.
Unless your baby has some other health problems and can't alert you to
his/her needs, you will have no problem hearing him/her and responding
appropriately.
To me, this isn't a blindness issue.
P.S. My daughter didn't sleep lying flat for a good few months. She just
wasn't able to stay asleep lying flat, so she slept inclined in her
swing, carseat or papas an seat. And her peditritian was fine with this.

All this is to say, you can have a bunch of ideas on what *you* want,
only to find that the baby doesn't much care.
And, you can't make a baby eat, sleep or poop, all you can do is make
them feel comfortable enough for them to decide this is what they want
to do. And, what you find comforting and what they find comforting may
be very different.

Hello Jen,
This is completely personal preference. Let me tell you though that my
son
slept in a crib in an ajoining room and I, who am not even a very light
sleeper, had absolutely no problem waking up and attending to him when
he
needed feeding, changing, etc. I also have a guide dog and experience
the
same with her. You will tune in to your baby and, especially if he or
she
is close to you in the same room, or even if he or she is farther away
and
you have a baby monitor on during the night, I am sure you will be able
to
hear him or her and attend to him or her just fine. I find it very
interesting that this person seems to be using your blindness as reason
to
sleep with your baby. Again, to me, this is completely personal
preference.
There is tons you can read about all sorts of sleeping arrangements and,
like everything else, you will have to do what you think is best for you
and
your particular situation.
Good luck.
Melissa

Hello, parents.

I'm very happy to have joined this list. There's so much here to learn
and I'm enjoying all the discussions and gathering a great deal of
information. With your help, I found a stroller that can be pulled
behind me; it's from Graco and also contains the right harness and
includes a car seat.

Now, here's another burning question: What are your views about
sleeping arrangements for a new baby? I now have a bassinet that the
baby can sleep in right next to me and my husband in our bedroom.
Later, when the baby can sleep through the night comfortably, there's
a crib in a different room. However, in talking to two doulas I know,
one of whom is blind and also a mother and who will be helping me out
at the hospital and maybe at home, these women suggested that I might
want the baby to sleep in our bed with us. They said that as blind
parents (my husband is also blind), we would want to be as close to
the baby as possible during the night in order to hear any little
noises or restlessness and be able to quickly see if the baby needs to
be fed or otherwise attended to. My first reaction to this is that I'd
really like the baby to be in the bassinet instead, which I think is
near enough to us. I'm a light sleeper and I already tune into my
guide dog when she wakes up and fidgets and scratches an itch or
shifts position in order to get comfortable again. I'm hoping I can be
attentive enough to the baby asleep in the bassinet near us. I also
would just like the baby to get used to having its own space, although
I'm not completely averse to a small child wanting to sleep next to
the parents for part of the night or if he or she is scared or just
wants to crawl into bed with them early in the morning for a while. My
stepdaughter has done that a few times and she found it comforting,
but she did know that she had her own bed.

Any thoughts?

Jen
