[blparent] stats

Yes I understood that the worker was obligated to make a home visit. She
and I had a great visit talking about social work since both our degrees are
in that field. I also worked for SSA at the time and we had contact with
each others agencies due to children receiving ssi who were in foster care.
It all worked out fine. She found no cause for further investigation. I
think that plays a part in the assessment of blind parents. whether
education should be a factor or not is a whole other issue. I know that a
young mother who was blind here in Alabama was put through the ringer at
first simply because the ex in laws were causing her trouble. Initially the
workers seem to talk down to her. Finally after a few visits and learning
that this mom was working with voc rehab to go to college they left her
alone. I certainly don't think that a person needs a degree to be a
wonderful parent. My mother only finished the 9th grade and was one of the
kindest and intelligent women I have ever known. So that is one of my
observations about the subject from the south.

Child Protective Services are required to follow up on every report, no
matter who it comes from. Still, I wonder if they would have reacted in the

same way if both parents had been sighted. It's always hard to know for
sure how much blindness weighs in.
