My son who is almost four loves his play kitchen, dishes, and food. He plays
restaurant a lot and brings us the food we order.  He also makes food for
his stuffed animals, cars, and other toys.  I'm sure your friend's son will
love this gift.

V, I think your gift was acceptable. This is just my opinion, but our 
culture tries to overly categorize toys or activities for children and even 
adults. It's ok for boys to play with dolls and girls to play with trucks 
and cars.
