Our changing table is really a long sturdy wooden dresser.  We have a
changing pad on one end, and there is still room for lotion, etc. at the
other.  This has worked great for both of my kids.  Austin wore diapers
until he was three, and even at that time I was able to put him on the
dresser/changing table for changes.  It is also where I kept Austin's
clothes until he moved into his "big boy room" and where Oriana's clothes
are now.  When we have our last child, he or she will get the dresser to use
permanently, as well as the crib which will turn into a full sized bed.  I
totally understand not wanting to spend the money for a new piece of
furniture, but this is definitely an option and could last for a very long
time--even through a couple of kids or more if that's your plan.
	I never got the hang of changing diapers while my child is standing,
but my sister was really great at that method.

Thanks everyone for your feedback, keep it coming.  Don't have an extra desk
to change on but love that idea because the changing tables have a low
weight capacity for the most part which is a shame.  I use one end of my
island in my kitchen for a changing station when I'm down-stairs and it
works great, I took a big beach towel and folded it to be a soft pad under
him and put a water-proof portable changing pad on top of that.  I also use
those disposable pads for my changing stations which is a must and has saved
me from lots of washing and laundry many of times.  With my station down
stairs on the island I just got to make sure and stay right up against it
and have toys for the boy to play with otherwise he's wanting to crawl
across the island to get to my Chrystal containers and anything else like my
crock pot(cute but very time consuming, smiling).  I'm tall so the taller
the station to change at the better it is on my back.  Can't do the couch
since I only have tile down stairs and that would kill my knees but wouldn't
be bad for carpeted areas.  I utilize the tables in public if they look safe
enough because some of those wall units look very flimsy and they slope
terribly when you put your child on them.  I have been putting Dawson on my
lap with a portable pad under him for just wet diapers but he's even getting
too big for that now not to mention too wiggly. GRIN  I'd love to know how'd
most of you take on poopy diapers in public with a wiggly and roaming
toddler?

The floor so didn't work for me. It hurt my back like hell. Also, it just
gave my kid more room to move about on. 
What did work was a desk. Put it up against the wall, ideally in acorner so
that there is only one way off that desk, and that way is towards you. 
The desk is bigger then the changing table, and it can withstand more
weight.  Our changing table was only specced for 30 pounds.  I discovered
this when it collapsed with my kid on it. She wasn't hurt, but she did want
the table out of the house which I was happy to accomidate. 

Also, the desk is shorter then the changing table and was physically much
easier for me to use.  I only wish I'd used the desk option far sooner.

I took the changing cushion and put it on the floor.  It was easier for me
that way and I didn't have to worry about Gab falling! V

Hello list,

Dawson is a big boy now at 22lbs and so long that he's almost out-grown his
changing table.  I wanted to see how those of you with toddlers prefer to
change your munchkins to make diapering time safe, fun and comfortable for
everyone.  If you don't have toddlers yourself but know of someone with a
toddler who has a creative successful way of changing their toddler then
please let me know as well.  I've heard that the floor method is often times
a challenge since it's a struggle to keep the toddler from rolling and
wanting to crawl away.  I've looked at some child care center grade changing
tables for toddlers but these are definitely not in my price range since
they want $250 and above.  Also, I'd love to hear some tips for changing
toddlers in public since we're right around the corner for that.  Dawson
loves to lay on something soft for being changed so if you all know of any
large changing pads for toddlers that are nice and squishy then please let
me know.
