I'm a neat freak, too, but I've had to let a lot of that go with kids. 
Sarah has a big toy box and some buckets, and things get tossed in there. 
Once in a while I sort everything out and make sure there's not a lot 
missing, but in between things just get tossed in the buckets.  I would draw

the line at a room that smelled like dirty socks.  For me, it was food 
getting left upstairs--and finding a piece of pizza under the bed that 
looked like it had been there for a hundred years--so now there's no food 
upstairs, ever, and no drinks except water.
