We don't have sidewalks in neighborhoods, but thankfully on the busy streets
we do. V

Oh wow, at least, yeah we did have sidewalks. Another thing I tried is to
call the office and ask them if you could put up a notice on the bullitain
board asking if anyone would be willing to help. Didn't mean to discourage
you, I think the city I live in is a very snotty city so people where you
are definitely could be more giving.

Hi,
Did you have sidewalks? Here there is no sidewalks. The route that I would
need to walk him is between to major highways. It is a cut through road
from one to the other highway. There are speed bumps, but there is still
lots of speeding between bumps.

Good luck with this. When we moved into our apartment a few years ago I was

so excited because that area probided bus transport for the kids. As my son

was only in kindergarten at the time and the school was over a mile away I
was glad we didn't have to walk it. Well, guess what, they canceled
transportation. I called everyone I could think of, even asked about paying

for transportation somehow, nope no help anywhere. Luckily there were some
people in our apartment complex that did end up helping us but we walked
many a cold, hot, morning that mile to school.

Well I hope his is more helpful than the transportation administrater at the
board of education. He kept insisting that his hands were tied and that my
son could ride a bus which mainly transports the elderly to shopping areas.
It is a dial a ride type bus. I called them last year when Lucas first
started to school, and they said that they could not be responsible for
getting children to school on time. This was the so called alternative
resource that the board of education recommended. I am going to pursue
talking to the super intendnet of the Florence City Board of Education and
see what type of response I get. I also realize that I may have to find
another person to drive him. It is just so frustrating when there are
exceptions for disabled students and the transportation, but none for the
disabled parents. I realize that I chose to become a parent and my
responsibility is to provide for my children, I just wish the school system
would assist me. I hate feeling like I am begging someone to pick him up.
I even asked if I could pay for the bus to pick him up and the answer was
no,.

Hopefully your principal will be more helpful than ours ever was. Now that
my child is leaving, she is retiring. Sheesh!

"Help the blind mom out" seems to be the status quo here. You would think
that paying someone would be incentive enough for timeliness. I just want
to find out how her children manage not to get into trouble being late so
often. I figure that Lucas is in kindergarten and the school is not as
strict about the arrival time for him. I tried to contact the guidance
counselor regarding his situation but never received a call back, time to
call the principal I guess.

I would approach this from a safety angle for him.
I'd also say that even if one of you were sighted, that doesn't matter
because if the parent doing kid duty at pickup and drop off time is blind,
then you have the same problem. Assumming Papa Bear can see, if Papa Bear
needs to be at work, he can't just bop on home to do pickup and drop-off.
I'd approach the school system as a safety issue and explain that your son
needs to get to school in all kinds of weather and all kinds of walking
conditions, and that being blind, these conditions may be unsafe for you to
safely escort him.
Your second option is to find a driver who is not late. Explain that this is
a business arangement not a "help the blind mom out" arangement and go from
there.

Hi,
I have a question related to school transportation. How do you all get your
children to school? My oldest rides a bus since we are more than 2 miles
from his middle school. I have to pay someone to take Lucas my
kindergartener because we are under the 2 mile rule here. I have read the
state policy re the 2 mile rule and it doesn't seem to be an exception which
includes our situation. Both I and my husband are blind/ visually impaired
and don't drive, the rule would pick up our son Lucas if he was disabled,
but not since we are unable to drive him to school. I am not happy with his
ride to school because she is constantly late and I don't know anyone else
who has children who attend his school. Just wondering what you all do in
the area of school transportation. Also if you have any suggestions as how
to tackle this problem with the school board.

Jill

When do your muchkins get out for the summer. Gab's last day is next
Tuesday. The 5th grade talent show is Friday and Gab and 3 of her friends
are doing some kind of a skit. They won't let me know what it is, she
claims it is a surprise. I tried to listen in this evening while they were
practicing, but she saw me and retreated to her room. Guess I will have to
wait till Friday like everyone else.
Also Monday the 5th graders get to go on a fieldtrip. First they go
swimming at the Aquatic center up here, then they break for lunch and then
on to the bowling alley for a quick game.
Then at 2:00 they return to the school where they have a celebration of
school days past and some out door games designed only for them.
Then Tuesday they return to say good-bye and get year books signed.
I can't believe she will be in 6th grade next year.
Wah, they sure do grow up fast. I was just saying that I went to my first
meeting for blind parents just "yesterday."
