[blparent] selecting a pediatrician

Hi Jan.
Before our daughter was born, we actually scheduled consultations with
practices. When calling, I remember one in particular telling me they
didn't usually schedule consultations with parents before their children
came, and refered me to their website. I took that as a bad sign and
impression, and I felt like if they didn't have the time to let me meet with
them, they might not have the time to spend with and take care of my child
the way I wanted.
We ended up finding a great practice, but last November, we moved because of
my husband's new job. Before we moved, I found reccomendations for good
pediatricians in the area from individuals with children.
I had a phone interview with the practice I chose, and I made sure to be
very up front with the fact that my husband and I were both totally blind,
and took care of our daughter by ourselves. I asked if the pediatricians
there had ever had experiences with parents who may have a disability.
Fortunately, she and the other doctors in the practice have been fine with
us, and I have never felt the need to take someone sighted. In fact, I try
to avoid it, to prevent any issues that could possibly arise.
I wish you luck in finding a good pediatrician. The first thing I would
suggest is finding out from your insurance company which doctors they carry,
and then getting reccomendations from friends/family. Hope this helps!
Nikki

Ok, so we are 12weeks from our due date.
I need to find a pediatrician.
when looking for a midwife, I found that:
1. the midwives that were recommended by the natural birthing Bradley
people might have been great, but they were not open to blindness
and/or people of different cultures.
2. Most of the blind people in my area weren't/arent as picky about
professionals being respectful/etc. If a professional was belittling
or degrading, they just let it pass and in many cases: just took their
sighted sister or husband along. That is not what I am looking for.
So:
How did you find a good pediatrician?
did you have to "interview" for one?
does anyone have experience with bad and good ones? What have you
learned? How can you spot the good ones so you don't waste time and
money with the bad ones?
thanks for the help.
