[blparent] selecting a pediatrician

I completely agree with all of the advice given here. Also, I would set up
interviews as soon as possible as babies tend to come into the world when
they feel like it and not always when we expect them. Our son was actually
born the day of, or the day before, we planned to interview his
pediatrician. He was three weeks early, so needless to say we weren't
expecting him quite that soon. We found our pediatrician by asking a friend
of ours we trusted, and it's worked out great. We were lucky that she was
the only one we had to interview because we all liked her right away. The
only thing I would add is that if you find someone you think you like, and
then, for whatever reason, it turns out you don't like the person as much as
you thought you would, do not feel bad about shopping around again and
finding someone new. You really need to be able to trust this person, to be
able to communicate with him or her well, etc. It's all right to move
around a little until you find what you want. Also, if the pediatrician is
in a practice shared with other pediatricians, make sure you interview
everyone who might care for your child. If you love one doctor, but don't
like the others at all, that's a really tough position to be in unless you
can guarantee you'll always be able to see the doctor of your choice. I
found this out the hard way during my first pregnancy. I loved my OBGYN,
and she ended up being the one who delivered my son, but I really did not
like one of the other doctors that might have been on call... Needless to
say, the second time around I made sure I liked all of the midwives in the
practice before choosing to have my care there.
The best of luck! Finding doctors is really hard work!

Hello Jan,

I must say finding a pediatrician you and your child loves and that you all
feel comfortable with is so important, at least, to me, it was.

My son's pediatrician was recommended by my OBJYN and I also received
recommendations for this pediatrician from other moms.

I did meet with and interview my son's current pediatrician, and I knew
right away, that I wanted to use him. He was very laid back and did not
focus on mine or my husband's blindness. He did not ignore it, but that
wasn't the primary discussion, of course, since I wasn't there to talk all
about me and my husband being blind but how will you as a pediatrician fit
in with what we need as parents.

His answers fit in with what I needed and wanted from a pediatrician.

So, my advice, ask, ask, ask from other moms in your area. They will be
some of the best help for you!

To me, it was important to meet him/her face-to-face as I believe you
usually can tell a lot about someone by sitting and talking with them
face-to-face.

Make sure their beliefs and practices are in line with what you believe/like
in a pediatrician such as--views on vaccines, breast feeding, after-hours
visits, etc.

One thing that I loved about my son's pediatrician from the get-go was that
he made himself available to us by giving us his personal cell phone number.
He also came into his office on a Sunday to retest our son's belly Ruben.
That says a lot. I am sure he didn't do that just for us, but he would do
that for any of his patients.

Hope this helps!~

Kind Regards,

Ok, so we are 12weeks from our due date.
I need to find a pediatrician.
when looking for a midwife, I found that:
1. the midwives that were recommended by the natural birthing Bradley
people might have been great, but they were not open to blindness
and/or people of different cultures.
2. Most of the blind people in my area weren't/arent as picky about
professionals being respectful/etc. If a professional was belittling
or degrading, they just let it pass and in many cases: just took their
sighted sister or husband along. That is not what I am looking for.
So:
How did you find a good pediatrician?
did you have to "interview" for one?
does anyone have experience with bad and good ones? What have you
learned? How can you spot the good ones so you don't waste time and
money with the bad ones?
thanks for the help.
