[blparent] snack and hotel rooms

We did the same as Marsha suggested in Dallas. We got a large ice chest and
kept food in there. When we went there, I had a 6 month old baby, and we
were told we would have a fridge. I was breastfeeding, so didn't need it
for bottles but I did have some homemade baby food along. They have a mini
bar in the room, so for the first part of the week I told them I had to use
it but wasn't drinking any of what they had in there. I'm told they'll
charge you even if you move things inside it so I was straight forward with
them about it. I needed a fridge and one wasn't available. I could have
just gotten ice, but that didn't occur to me at first. :) Then our group
(we had an adjoining room with some friends) had the idea to go to Walmart
and get the ice chest and food. They had a heck of a time taking the bus
out there though, so if people offer to take people, I would take them up on
it and pay for the ride.
Anyway, we got cereal and milk (you can get the cereal that comes in bowls
already to save trouble), lunch meat and cheese (make sure you get freezer
bags or containers to keep it in), bread, bagels and cream cheese, fresh
fruit (doesn't necessarily have to be refrigerated if you're going to eat it
quickly), peanut butter and jelly, granola bars, raisins, cheezits.
Marsha's right, the hotels are really expensive there! We ate maybe one
meal a day in the restaurant, as I need hot food at least once, but
otherwise we ate in our room.
Wish we were going this year.

At the Dallas convention hotel, there are no microwaves in the rooms. And if
when you make your reservation you want a refrigerator, you will need to
make a request for it. The last few years, even though we have checked in on
the Friday night before convention, and though we requested, we still had
trouble getting one. So my suggestion, if you have children, is to go to a
grocery store, buy the cheap Styrofoam ice chests, get a few bags of ice to
begin. You can keep milk, OJ and sodas or juice cool for the week. Your
going to have to refill the chest every day with ice from the hotel ice
machines, but it is well worth it. Without a microwaves, there are always
sandwiches, meat ones, PB&J. If you have milk, you can have cereal. When
your at the grocery store, buy plates, spoons, and knives, and cups, and
paper towels. In the morning you can always eat the granola bars, oatmeal by
using the coffee pot hot water. I have known people to go and buy a cheap
microwave for just convention and use it and then leave it. I have also
known people to buy a cheap toaster oven, hot plate, and other small
appliances for just the week. There are those roman noodles, that need hot
water. So do some of the other soups and noodle thingys. The first year I
went to the dallas convention, I had my 3 kids along, the second year, I
took just one child, and then this year I am only taking one child. It cuts
down on costs too. You can also take butter knives and spoons, for like
cutting up apples and bananas. We also usually get bananas, apples, and
perhaps oranges, for the healthy part of a meal. There are also applesauces,
that do not need to be refrigeratored. Yogurts can go in the ice cooler.
Grocery stores also sell the small mustards and mayo for the sandwiches. The
restaurants are expensive in the dallas hotel. I mean there is nothing wrong
with eating in them if you can afford it, but guess I would rather go the
cheap route.
Can you tell I have done this a few years in a row. LOL

Hello, I'm sure we have discussed this before and if I looked really hard in
the archives, I could find it, but could you all chime in and tell me what
kind of snacks you find beneficial in a hotel room.
I know there is a microwave, but that is all.
