Yes, they're Melissa and Doug puzzles. Now that I realize that, I probably
could have found a better price elsewhere on the Web. But anyway, they're
really nicely made, and my daughter is very interested in them, at least for
the moment. I got the US map primarily because I was having a hard time
explaining what a state was to her. Also, she may soon be making a trip to
see her dad's ailing parents in Michigan, so I wanted to have a way to show
her where Michigan is, since I may not travel with her. But after only 24
hours, she can recognize many of the states and put together perhaps a third
of the map border. As I said, my only complaint is that shuffling the
pieces around or blocking the light with her hands will set the puzzle
rattling off state names she isn't trying to put in. Overall, I'm really
impressed, and I would recommend the number and letter puzzles for any blind
parent to use as teaching aids. I want to look and see if I can find one
with lowercase letters as well.

Are these the Melissa and doug talking puzzles? I didn't know there was a
state one. That is awesome!

I just ordered the letter and number puzzles, and the US map puzzle, from
Blind Mice Mega Mall. The puzzles came today. They're well made and pretty
cute, and my daughter is fascinated with them. When you put a piece in, the
puzzle talks, so it's good for teaching letters and numbers. On the letter
puzzle, each letter piece has a picture under it of something that starts
with that letter. The state puzzle has pictures on some of the pieces,
too--apples for Washington, potatoes for Idaho, a polar bear for Alaska, a
pineapple for Hawaii, the Golden Gate Bridge for California, etc. The only
problem I've encountered with the puzzles is that sometimes they talk when
they aren't supposed to because they talk when light is blocked. So on her
way to put California in, the puzzle announces Colorado, Utah, Nevada, and
New Mexico. That's kind of confusing.

Hi Dianna:
A friend of mine had introduced me to a website called www.seedlings.org.
There you can find books that are in print/braille that are either
contracted braille or uncontracted braille. They range from 5 dollars to 10
or 11 dollars. I saw an alphabet book on there. Or you can also go onto
www.nbp.org. They also have books in both print and braille. their prices
are also very reasonable. I hope this helps.
