Hi, Ronit.

Feeding was difficult for me to do with my little daughter too, when
she was that age. I did find that facing her was somewhat easier and I
never even tried standing behind the chair, which I would think would
be really awkward. Although I don't think I ever got really good at
feeding (I often ended up with green beans in my hair, but I'm the
diaper-changing aficionada; my husband's the real feeding expert), I
did find that at these ages, babies are a little more likely to move
their mouths toward the spoon themselves. Since your son seems to want
to feed himself, this might be what's happening. You could try just
positioning the spoon toward him and seeing if he just seems to look
at it and aim for it himself. He's probably more interested in seeing
it and moving his mouth toward it rather than having anyone try to put
it into his mouth. It's tricky and frustrating sometimes, but you'll
find ways to do it. And feeding at this stage can be really messy,
too; that's normal. Best of luck!

Jen
