[blparent] Leashes (was resource list)

I'm in disagreement here.  I believe that leashes are for dogs not for
children.  I don't believe that a child should be treated like an animal
which is what a leash is really for.  There has to be other ways to keep
watch of our children other than leashing them.  I hope people are exploring
these options before using a leash or tether.

Amanda, like Jo Elizabeth, I am also interested in how "good parents" find
other ways to manage their children. I have a BS in child development, along
with raising 3 boys. I think I have said before that my youngest probably
could have been just fine if I never used a leash. I still think he enjoyed
a lot more freedom of movement on the   leash along with the other benefits
I mentioned before. Also, I just feel a lot more dignified standing up
straight next to a child who has sat himself down on the ground and is
refusing to move than I am having to crouch over him to keep hold of his
hand. My experience is also that a child in the midst of such a rebellion is
going to be twisting his hand around and trying to jerk his own little hand
out of yours. With a leash I am able to allow a small distance between us
while I wait for my child to either accept that he is not going to get his
way, or for him to recover his own self control and dignity. 

Leashes have  been used with children for centuries. There are paintings
from the early middle ages of royals and nobles on what were then called
leading strings. My point here is that leashes are not training tools meant
for dogs.

I am not trying to convince you to use a leash. I do not care if you use one
or not. I am trying to explain how one is used in the hope that you will
grasp that those of us who do choose to use leashes are still good parents.

That did not come across as it sounded. I do apologize. I am not saying you
are not good parents, but as good parents we should be able to find better
ways of keeping our kids in tow besides using products made for animals.
Just my opinion. I apologize if I am not a master of stating things
tactfully and came across as rude or anything. That was not my intention and
my friends know that, while I am very opinionated, I never mean any offense.
Since you guys just barely met me, you have no way of knowing what I'm like,
but I assure you I am not the type of offensive person I may have come
across as on here. To each his own really, I just personally have a serious
aversion to the things, but whatever. Not trying to be nasty though. I hope
I can be forgiven and will try harder to hold my tongue, or in this case
fingers, when talking to a bunch of strangers.
