[blparent] teen laundry

Good luck with that, Erin. I'm not saying you shouldn't try and teach that
important lesson. But just like all of your hard work feeding your sweet
little baby healthy foods seems to go for naught the first time somebody
hands him a potato chip or a bite of ice cream, the teaching of being
helpful around the house gets a lot harder when your tot marches off to
preschool and hears some other kid whine that picking up toys is boring!
Not that I don't try, mind you. Sarah does enjoy helping me make
dinner--stirring things, cracking eggs, that kind of stuff--and I make her
pick up her clothes and toys and bring any cups or bowls she's managed to
wander out of the kitchen with back to the sink.

I started doing my own laundry in junior-high but I actually wanted to do it
earlier than that. I think ten is a good age but it really just depends on
the kid and their maturity level. I think that like most things if it's a
normal thing that's done at a younger age it just becomes normal and not
even an issue later on. I'm hoping to teach my son to do a lot of helpful
things around the house before those crazy hormones kick-in that interfere
with so many things. He'll learn that just like on a job, there are rewards
that go along with helping the family and consequences for not.

Sorry; I didn't see that message until just now. As you can probably tell,
it's been a while since I've read email. At what age do you guys think is
appropriate for kids to start doing their own laundry?
