If peeps are afraid of pins, then another idea is to sew those bells on to
the clothing, but one thing to remember, if the kiddos aren't moving, the
bells don't ring.
Bells are still choking hazards, so which ever choice you make, be sure
those bells are tightly attached some how.
I kind of like those squeaky shoes.

I didn't say it was, Berenedetta expressed some concerns with safety pins,
so my response was that it's just old school so probably not what she's used

I think the safety pin folks are just old school. Many of us wore diapers
with safety pins. 
Anybody know where to get the wrist or ankle rattles?

Personally I would advise against using safety pinns on a baby or toddler.
Maybe it has worked for some without incident, but I'd be very hesitant to
do it simply because the toddler or baby would have full access to the
safety pins. They aren't always easy to open, but when they are open,
they're quite sharp and very risky for baby.
I like the idea of sewing little bells into socks, and they have now these
little rist wrattles that you can also put on their arms and legs to give
you the same kind of feedback as the ancle bracelets you speak of.
