Some people like to parent by force. I don't like that approach for 
myself. People like that often want to take matters in their own hands 
rather than involve professionals. That rarely gets anyone anywhere good.
I wouldn't do it, personally.  Go with your gut instinct. No one can 
tell you how to parent your child, especially if they're telling you to 
institute something that's borderline torturous. If they want to force 
their kids to comply, that's there issue. You don't have to follow suit.
