Thank you for this nice note.
I wasn't sure where the tone of the discussion was going to go when I
posted. The pediatric guidelines say that any screen time is bad until the
child is two, and that's never made much sense to me. First tv's are in
every hospital. Had it been turned on, the tv would have been the very first
thing my daughter saw when she was born. Also the no screen time guidelines
don't take into account the other members of the family.
And maybe your right about my passion for aviation coming through.

Your anecdote was wonderful, and thank you for sharing it with us. I think
your outlook on this is fine--I don't think we were talking about
prohibiting kids from watching TV altogether, my impression was that we were
talking about babies. In your instance, having your child participate in
something you are passionate about is great. Although if I may say so, I
think that your daughter shares your passion for things that fly not because
she saw the space landing but because your passion for this resonates with
her. Sometimes, if a parent feels strongly enough about something, this
resonates with a child and the child then shares the passion for this with
the parent. It's a wonderful way to bond.
When I said it's unhealthy to allow children to watch TV or interact with
computer or handheld devices, I was referring to those kids whose parents
sit them down in front of the TV or shove an IPhone in their face to keep
them occupied. Parents make the mistake of thinking that if they spend time
playing with their tablets and whatever else, their babies should do the
same.
I see your point, Jo Elizabeth; There are some great educational shows out
there for kids, but I'll venture to say that those benefit older kids more
than they do younger ones, and there are creative, interactive games and
activities out there to teach a child about exotic animals and such. I think
those are probably more useful than most of the shows. I'm all for a half
hour show here and ther for an older child though. That can be fun and
educational, for sure.
Bernadetta.
