Hi.  It just depends on your family and your needs.  I had a guide dog who 
was starting to slow down when my baby was born, which worked out fairly 
well because I traveled less during the infant and toddler years.  Now that 
my daughter entered first grade and the dog passed away, I went for training 
with a new one.  It was hard to leave for the two weeks of training, but 
really, the man of the house was worse about it than my daughter was.  The 
process of losing the last dog, bringing the new one home, and adjusting to 
her has been difficult because of some sadness and some jealousy over the 
attention the new dog has gotten from other people, but in the end, it will 
be worth the trouble.  I will travel independently and be able to go further 
with a dog than I can with a cane on field trips and back and forth to my 
daughter's school for Halloween parties and the like.  For us, it works. 
But it has taken a lot of effort.  I don't know that I would have wanted a 
younger dog while my child was young.  I wouldn't have wanted to leave for 
training while I had a toddler or have a young dog in the house with a very 
small child.  It was good because my dog was older and very patient.  Her 
guidework and her behavior in the house were solid.  Now that I have a new 
dog, I have to be watchful of her work when we go out.  I have to stop and 
rework errors when she makes them so that they don't become habits.  I have 
to pay particular attention to how she greets new people so that we set up 
good patterns from the start.  I wouldn't have wanted to be fussing with 
these things while caring for a baby or a young child.  Now that my kid has 
more independence, I'm ready to take on a new dog.  These are all things to 
think about.

Very good insight.

I have had four guide dogs, and all during our kids growing years.  The
intensity in  changes in bringing New Dog home and everyone getting
acclimated are not unlike thos faced by bringing a new baby home.  Both take
time, forethought and planning.  To be able to accurately answer this
question, it would be helpful to kknow what is driving this train.

What exactly are you thinking about?
I've used two dogs and I use a cane now. There are pros and cons and you
need to be aware of them.
It's my belief and experience that the guide dog model is a very masculine
model. It doesn't account for the demands of pregnancy, newborns and young
children. You can work around this, just as you can work around anything.
You'll have to decide if that's what you want, what impact it will have on
your family and if that's how you and your family want to spend time money
and energy.
I've told many people that having a new baby is way easier then adjusting to
a guide dog. People "get" babies even if they differ on the best way to
handle them. Very few people "get" guide dogs. They expect perfection and
that expectation is based on them and what they think they know and has very
little to do with reality.
