First, do you like dogs?  Have you been around them as pets?  Not 
prerequisites, of course, but will help you know what you are getting into.

The cons are that you will have to give them time and attention, as you 
would your kids, but not in the same way.  Once they get home, the best 
thing to do is keep them on their feeding and potty and tie-down schedules 
for a few weeks until they get used to the home environment.  With that 
extra effort at the start, they will more comfortably and conveniently fit 
in over time.

It can be inconvenient needing to take them out, rain or shine.  It is 
inconvenient packing for them when you go on trips, and it can be 
inconvenient needing to mind a toddler and direct the dog sometimes.

Now for the pluses.  The way I see it, the inconveniences mentioned above 
are far outweighed by the companionship and enjoyment and love.  Just like 
kids, who could also be thought of as being inconvenient, but no doubt, all 
of us would saying that raising kids is the toughest job we'll ever love, 
and wouldn't trade it for anything.

Just be ready to give the dog the patience, time and attention they will 
need at first.
