[blparent] How do you give eye drops to a new-born?

Hi. Ronit has given a good description of administering eyedrops. Keep a
lot of tissues on hand and expect spills and fussing as par for the course.
Eyedrops are difficult to dispense to a person of any age besides oneself.
Sometimes there are alternative forms of medication that are worth inquiring
about. When my daughter had pinkeye--at age four or five, thank God, and
not in her infancy--I was able to get an ointment I could apply to her eyes,
rather than liquid drops. I could dab the ointment on the tip of my right
forefinger, then separate her eyelids and paint it on the moist iner
surfaces, so to speak. The only drawback of that method was that I had to
be extremely careful to wash my own hands before I touched anything, as well
as have my daughter wash her hands, so as not to spread the infection.

Best of luck and be well!

Hi Darrell,
One method I've used is you just pull the bottom eyelid down a little
bit with one finger and hold it in place. Then you bring your other
hand with the bottle and use your hand holding the eyelid as a guide
to know where to place the head of the dropper and then squeeze. Yes
you will spill some and you will wonder if enough goes in but using
the bottom eyelid is much more effective than using the top eyelid. It
is much harder to hold the top eyelid up and the baby will try to
blink etc etc so that's why the bottom eyelid is a better way to go.
Good luck to you all!
Ronit
