We got our son something called a Scribble and Write. It has letter guessing games, and it also showed him how to write different letters; he had to follow the lights with a pen. He loved it. My daughters did too, but since they are both legally blind it was a little harder for them to use. We also had magnetic letters, alphabet puzzles, and books with print and braille. There are also stencils you can get for your child to trace. There are flashcards with alphabet letters, colors, numbers... There is a lot out there. My thought was if I could send my kids to school with at least the knowledge of letters, numbers, and colors--if they could identify them correctly--they would be all right. Learning to write their numbers at four when they entered pre-k seemed fine to me. I am definitely not saying working with your child is a bad idea. I just feel as if kids are pushed pretty hard pretty fast these days, so it might be OK to let them slow down just a little.

I also had alphabet puzzles with each letter cut out individually, and braille and print on each letter so I could do the puzzles with my daughter, but the Fridge Phonics toy was a big hit because of the musical component. Songs in learning can't be underestimated
