[blparent] Teaching reading and writing

I don't think I'd try a raised line drawing kit at age four. The tools are sharp and the plastic sheets in the kit are thin and hard to work with. If you want a four-year-old to make raised lines, try giving her a ballpoint pen and letting her use it on a piece of braille paper or construction paper with a towel or a couple of folded-up paper towels underneath it.

Thanks everybody for the great ideas! I have a few more questions. How do you know what your kids are riding if you’re writing correctly. If any of you guys tried a raised line drawing kit with your kids does that work?

My daughters did too, but since they are both legally blind it was a little harder for them to use. We also had magnetic letters, alphabet puzzles, and books with print and braille. There are also stencils you can get for your child to trace. There are flashcards with alphabet letters, colors, numbers... There is a lot out there. My thought was if I could send my kids to school with at least the knowledge of letters, numbers, and colors--if they could identify them correctly--they would be all right. Learning to write their numbers at four when they entered pre-k seemed fine to me. I am definitely not saying working with your child is a bad idea. I just feel as if kids are pushed pretty hard pretty fast these days, so it might be OK to let them slow down just a little.
