				Excellent Steve.
I never thought of using a light probe for the dishwasher settings, but then I don't have a light probe, I may need to get one.

Jennifer,

I don't think it hurts to get some information here, but this topic comes up often on Electronics-Talk and there may be more information there. I don't think there is much in the way of a shortcut to going to a large store and looking at some, though. One think you will find with dishwashers is that there are some with flat touch screens, some with flat panels but with buttons underneath that require pressure, and some that actually have buttons. Some remember defaults and some seem to start from scratch. While some have displays with actual messages, some have functions that cause a light to turn on right on the button that is pressed. Examples of functions that work like this are the energy saving settings such as a heated drying cycle or high temperature cycles where the water is heated. These cycles are turned on and off by repeatedly pressing the associated button, but I have been able to double-check the setting with a light probe when it matters.

The problem with almost anything that anybody tells you is that the model they give you could have been changed or discontinued. That's why you probably will need to try to go somewhere where you can get your hands on some models.

I have also used the Talking Thermostat from TalkingThermostats Inc and have found it to work well. I believe there is another thermostate that talks and may respond to some voice commands as well. The Talking Thermostat site where I got mine is

http://www.talkingthermostats.com

You may be prompted to allow a Microsoft Windows Media Plug-in to be run to play a short audio announcement, but you may find that helpful. I hope this is useful.

Best regards,

Steve Jacobson

Hello, listers.

My husband and I are blind and our children are sighted. We’re in the market for a new dishwasher and a new thermostat that we all could use. Any recommendations for appliances we could all use would be great. Thanks.

Jen
