One of the most common concerns blind parents have is how to monitor their
children in various places, such as zoos, swimming pools, and on public
transportation. I'm excited to share that my husband Greg DeWall will be
hosting an orientation and mobility advice column on the Blind Travelers'
Network website! Each month, he will address questions from readers on
techniques and tools for traveling in all sorts of situations and
environments, from traveling through busy airports to strolling through
farmers' markets to monitoring your children on the playground. Greg is a
National Orientation and Mobility Certificant (NOMC) who taught cane travel
to blind and low vision adults and youth for eight years at the Society for
the Blind in Sacramento, California. He is currently the Training Center
Supervisor at the Nebraska Commission for the Blind and Visually Impaired.
Just as importantly, he is totally blind himself; he has traveled all over
the world for work, pleasure, and judo; and he is the father of our two
young children, so he's quite the expert at monitoring children
non-visually in all sorts of environments. We will be officially launching
the Blind Travelers' Network website on Monday, June 3, but feel free to
read his introductory blog, register for the website, and comment on his
blog with a mobility related question for a future blog post.
