[blParent] Feeding Solid Food

Kelby,

First, if you have not generally been involved in feeding, it may take your little one a while to get the idea that this is feeding time as opposed to game time. I would try to pick one approach and stick with it for a while. As someone pointed out here last week, your baby will probably do best if you are where she can see you rather than being behind her. It isn't completely clear to me exactly where your baby is in this process. Is she being fed from a spoon that somebody else holds, or are you at the point where you are trying to teach her how to feed herself giving her the spoon to hold?

Try to understand what your partner or whomever else is feeding her has been doing when feeding her. For example, if your little one tries to grab the food, how has that been dealt with? You could try placing your hand at the upper part of her back to get a sense of whether her head is moving toward the spoon. You might even be able to tell if she is reaching with her hands by sensing whether her shoulders are moving, but it is also possible she won't like your hand resting there. So much of this depends on the individual child involved.

If she is drinking from a sippy cup of some kind, work with her to get used to her drinking from that when you are holding it. That might be a way to get her to get used to taking food from you even if you don't hold the food exactly as your partner or other people feeding her does.

Both of my kids were pretty good about wanting to eat rather than grabbing the food while we were still feeding them, so maybe others here have more ideas. Good luck.

Best regards,

Steve Jacobson

Subject: [blParent] Feeding Solid Food

Our baby is now old enough to start eating solid food. I don't want my wife to have to do all of the feeding, but we are having trouble putting together strategies. Feeding from behind and in front seem equally difficult, especially since she really likes trying to grab the food. What approaches to this have people found helpful?
