[blParent] Helpful resources?

Hello Stephanie, first, allow me to congratulate you on having your first child. It is a wonderful beautiful challenging experience. both my husband and I are blind and are raising one sided child who is now five years old. As for resources, and gathering my own materials I managed to end up with an extra box of brand new braille/print picture books that I would be more than happy to send to you. If you’d like you can message me privately to provide your address so that I may send them to you. Many of the books included the ones I used myself to read to my child and teach him as well. Just for your information, my five-year-old child can fully read anything we hand him because books have been a part of his life from birth. One of the books is extremely special and I have used it with not only my own child but all of my nieces and nephews and it really helped to teach the alphabet to them. It is a sensory book with buttons a letter is presented on each page the button announces the letter they are shown in braille print and also sign language And many of the photos have scratch and sniff as well, for example G for grapes smells like grapes. All the kids have love this one especially and I will include it in the box to you. Parenting is challenging for everyone and we all know how extreme those challenges can be without sight, but we find the Waze and you will too. Another thing we used and actually still use now are shoes with squeakers in them. There is a company called Ikiki, they sell their shoes through Amazon and I think through their own website as well but I’ve always used Amazon, they are reasonably priced at about $35 a pair and they have squeakers in the hills that can be turned on and off with a switch. These These have been absolutely invaluable! Also I’ve never heard anyone else mention them on this site. We started by using the bells, but we found that they were not audible enough much of the time and that they could come loose and fall off. Also they looked a little funny on the shoes and we would get some comments. The squeaky shoes look like ordinary sneakers, actually cuter than ordinary sneakers as they are all different kinds of animals. They also have Velcro closures making on and off super easy. My son has worn them since he started walking and still wears them now, of course he can respond verbally to us, he just likes wearing them now and the squeaks to help us still track him. His shoes get passed on to his cousin and she wears them as well when she is at our house making tracking her easier as well. I can’t recommend these shoes enough for tracking your child when you are out and about with him or her.

> One great piece of equipment I use and am partially sighted/legally blind later in life but after my first child is the Jeep Wagon Stroller. I still use it today as he?s 6 years old! It works with baby seats up to 100lbs and can both be pulled and pushed, folded and is able to go with you! I highly recommend it with or without the stroller piece because the baby is right with you and you have some storage as well when at stores or walking the community! Wishing you all the best with your new little one. May is a wonderful time of year for a little one.
