[Cabs-talk] rumors and reality: cabs election?

Hi Darian. I'm sure someone can tell you which offices are up for
re-election. I went to the last CABS meeting at convention but am not sure
which offices run for two years and
which are for one. If you attend the meeting however, each candidate is
usually given a chance to introduce his/her self.
I suspect you could question the candidates from the audience if you wanted
to find out about a specific One idea I think would be good is the CABS
constitution be posted on the website than any question about which
positions were open would be answered there.
The constitution if I remember was amended at the last
Meeting.
The CABS meeting will happen on Friday so I doubt there would be a lot of
time for an involved discussion.
Perhaps if students wish such a discussion to occur candidates could
introduce themselves on the listserve or maybe a conference meeting could be
conveened by one or more of the officers.
If such a position is open and if the division needs my services I have told
some I will gladly serve as a board member at large. I have one year left
until I graduate SDSU in June 2010 with my Masters in Rehabilitation.
I am not asking for the nomination but will be available if requested to
serve. I am not requesting a
higher office. When our affiliate reorganized I was the first
 president of the student division.
I held that office for a couple years and than it was taken by Michael
Bayliff.
I'm dating myself but doing it to say I want to see young blood have the
opportunity to serve that I did whether Depa continues in the office or
 some one else is elected.
I feel that as a board member I could serve as an organizer and an advisor
 based on my previous experience.

The rafting trip was a great idea and I commend the administration for
encouraging involvement of students. I however
would like to see regional seminars held in the north, the south
 and perhaps in central California.
These seminars would focus on teaching students about things like
how to acquire scholarships, how to set up a PASS,
How to acquire books what options are available, bookshare.org, RFBD etc and
other topics. The seminars would be maybe from 10:00 a.m to 4:00 p.m they
would
include a luncheon and maybe other features designed to get students
and parents to mingle and become familiar with the CABS and it's
role Why they should join CABS and what exactly is the NFB.
We would stress inviting blind high school students their parents, as well
as
local high school and college officials.
Another idea that could be fun is a Student legislative lunchon.
It could be held in Sacramento and we could invite State legislatures to
come
and talk with us as well as congressional leaders or their representatives.
We might even consider a march to the capitol similar to the National march
in Detroit and it could be a fundraiser as well as an educational event.
What a way to end our luncheon or begin it whichhever.
I think probably the March should come first and end as we conveen for the
 luncheon!
I would also like to introduce some new fundraising projects such as the
sell of holiday cards candles or gifts. This could be done online and at
events
Other fundraisers also could be created
We could attempt to get fraternities and sorities to assist in our efforts.
Moneys raised would be invested in developing
 our student affiliate across
theState.
My emphasis would be get more students involved in participation!
To me the membership not the board is the student division.
We need students in mass to get involved if we want
college books to be accessible if
we want to influence change on our local campuses we need to
organize the numbers to make our voices heard.
We need to invite government officials and college
administrators to our meetings and when necessary we need to ask
 hard questions.
We need to draft strong resolutions for the State convention and be
strong in our participation in the NABS.
We need to take very seriously the reality that
today's students are tomorrow's leaders in the NFBC.
This is why training seminars are so very important. We also need to
listen to the membership to work with the members and be receptive to their
ideas.
We need to encourage all students to do the work
not just the board. That being said, in most organizations not just the
student
division NFBC a minority seems to "get stuck" doing a majority of the work.
Please if you come to vote come also to participate as an
active member to help create the very best Student Division we have ever
had and to take an active part not just in voting but in
 shapeing
 your own destiny!
We need you each of you we need your voice your energy your
 creativity
and your unique talent that only you can provide.
So come Join us in Newark and help make our dreams come true.
Let's see a really large contingent of students on ThursdayOct 22, walking
across the golden gate bridge! How fun.

We are gifted in that we have some wonderful students with great leadership
 potential.
And with monumental budget cuts to education on the State level we need
all the help we can get!
Let's make the Student division CABS as well as the NFBC the
best they can be by working together.
I will vote for the candidates I like but when the smoke clears
I will as now do all I can to support those the membership deems most
suited to be their leaders.
God bless:
Michael Peterson
