Hi Lisa,

My name is Arielle Silverman and I'm the secretary of CABS and the
vice-president of the NFB national student division (NABS) of which
CABS is a part. I have only lived in Colorado for a year but I'll do
my best to describe the organization. It’d be great to have Becca join
us in any way she wants. If she uses email, it’d be great to have her
on the CABS listserv. There is also a listserv for NABS where Becca
could communicate with blind high school and college students across
the country. The NABS listserv, like this one, is hosted on
www.nfbnet.org.
There aren’t any particular obligations associated with joining CABS
besides paying the dues (which I think are $5) and participating in
whatever meetings or seminars she wants to go to. We’re having a
seminar for the CCB summer students on June 27 to educate them about
the NFB and to introduce them to blind student mentors, so Becca is
more than welcome to participate in that. We also meet every fall at
the NFB state convention (which this year is in Denver the first
weekend of November) and I imagine you’ll be attending that. We
periodically hold seminars which just provide opportunities for blind
students of all ages to exchange information and ask each other
questions as well as learn about the resources available in the
broader NFB. We have conference calls about once a month for the board
and any other members who want to help us plan events or give
feedback, so you and/or Becca are welcome to participate in those as
well.

Unfortunately, right now we only have a couple of active student
members in the Springs area, but we want to change that. If we decide
to launch a formal mentoring program with CSDB, since you live so
close to CSDB I’m sure we can include Becca as one of the mentees if
she is interested. She would be matched with a college student to
communicate with periodically by phone or email and then we would come
down to the Springs/CSDB a few times a year, so no significant travel
would be involved if she wanted to participate.

Thanks for your interest and feel free to call me at
602-502-2255
If you wish.

Arielle Silverman
Secretary, CABS
