Each year the National Federation of the Blind sponsors a Washington seminar in Washington D.C. to promote a legislative agenda to improve the lives of the Blind. The National Federation of the Blind of Ohio sends members to each Washington seminar to educate Ohio’s Congressional representatives about the need for the NFB’s legislative proposals. In addition, the National Federation of the Blind of Ohio also annually sponsors a Columbus seminar to promote State legislative proposals also aimed at improving the lives of the Blind.

Unfortunately, the cost of these events is continuing to increase. The ever increasing cost of traveling to Washington and Columbus is making it increasingly difficult for members to attend these important events. Consequently, this year the NFB of Ohio is trying to raise $5,000 via a Crowdfunding campaign to defray the cost of members’ attendance at the Washington and Columbus seminars. We are asking for your help in reaching our $5,000 goal by donating to the campaign and by sharing the news of the campaign with your social media networks. Here is the link to the campaign webpage on Generosity.com:

You may be wondering why it is so important for the NFB of Ohio to continue to participate in the Washington and Columbus seminars. Well, Nationally there are approximately 8 million adults and children who are considered Blind to some degree. Over ¼ million Blind individuals live in the State of Ohio. The Center for Disease Control estimates that the incidence of Blindness in the U.S. will more than double over the next 3 decades.

Despite more than 75% of adults who are blind receiving a high school diploma or higher, depending on the data source used the unemployment rate of the blind still remains at a staggering 60%-70%. This unemployment rate jumps significantly for Blind individuals who have a second disability.

This means almost 30% of all blind individuals live at or below the poverty level. Finally, the median household income of the Blind is approximately $39,000 which is $20,000 below the U.S. median household income of approximately $59,000,

All of this means that the Blind find it harder to become gainfully employed at competitive wages, and often live at or below the poverty level. In addition, with the incidence of Blindness expected to double over the next 3 decades, these problems will begin affecting a far greater number of Americans.

This is why it is so vital that the NFB of Ohio continue to participate in the Washington and Columbus seminars, and we need your help to continue this important work. Please donate and share our Crowdfunding campaign with your social media networks. As mentioned above, it can be found at:

The National Federation of the Blind knows that blindness is not the characteristic that defines you or your future. Every day we raise the expectations of blind people, because low expectations create obstacles between blind people and our dreams. You can live the life you want; blindness is not what holds you back

MEDIA ADVISORY - SPECIAL NEWS EVENT
For Thursday, December 21, 2017

FIRST IN THE MIDWEST: Columbus City Schools to unveil new Automated Short Story Kiosks to Promote Citywide Reading and Literacy Skills

In one of his last actions as Superintendent/CEO of Columbus City Schools, Dr. Dan Good will unveil the city’s first ever Automated Short Story Kiosks - similar to an ATM that dispenses free short stories - to promote reading and literacy skills in both young readers and older.

Columbus City Schools will be the first school district worldwide to deploy these devices, which have become very popular in France where they are manufactured by Short Édition, a Grenoble-based publisher.

A first for the Midwest, Columbus will join only five other cities in the United States that have similar kiosks: West Palm Beach (FL), Boston, State College (PA), Irvine (CA), and San Francisco.

Printed out on rolls of paper like a receipt, the free short stories are available at the touch of a button - selecting either “Stories for Young Readers” or “Stories for Everyone” - with the fictional tales ranging in length from one to five minutes of reading.

For now, the stories will come from Short Édition’s vast catalogs. In future years, the District will supplement those catalogs with short stories written specifically for and by Columbus City Schools’ students and staff.

Columbus City Schools has five of these Automated Short Story Kiosks, which were given to the District at no charge by the Pizzuti Company as part of an innovative tax agreement.

The first Automated Short Story Kiosk will be placed in the District’s newly-renovated Central Enrollment Center when construction is complete in the Spring. Other locations are still being worked out, with the goal of placing the kiosks in locations where young people might not have access to age-appropriate reading materials, such as waiting rooms, government offices, or shopping areas.

WHAT:
District to Unveil First-of-its-Kind Automated Short Story Kiosks

WHO:
Superintendent Dr. Dan Good, District Officials

WHEN:
Thursday, December 21, at 2:00 p.m.

WHERE:
