[Cash-and-caring] quiz turning to cash

Hoby, you and Richie are fountains of ideas. We may have to do some of this by sub-committees. I want to make sure our first three projects get the follow-up necessary for best results. We can add to the committee, but it will be hard to have meetings with much discussions by phone. But we will try to get to your idea. You will remember that it was much discussed at the last convention.

I think Richey is spot on. We need to set goals for each year and try to get the membership involved as much as possible.
I also envision this group coming up with new innovative fundraising strategies that have never been tried before, like the quiz.
The idea that I wish to discuss in detail on Sunday is tasting wine/beer/different unique foods in the dark.
Affiliates could put on events like this with our help to design them. NFB literature would be distributed and discussed at the event. This way, we have a greater chance of pulling in outside donors...
Tickets would be sold at a cost set by each entity doing the event. Any tasting could be accompanied by auctions, raffles, etc.
These are my thoughts that I wish to discuss with all of you on Sunday.
  Cheers,
  -- Hoby

I agree with all that has been said regarding:

  1) us (Cash and Caring) being us (NFB), therefore utilizing the contacts for the purpose of our outreach and development, what’s yours is mine or rather: ours in this organization.

  2) The quiz is working outreachwise, but not necessarily moneywise, and we need to figure that out

  3) We should definitely change the quiz up at some point. I think we haven’t necessarily given it enough time. We mentioned it on the list-servs, and at Washington seminar. The majority of our members are at chapter meetings and such, so most of those should be meeting this weekend. Our membership isn’t usually quick on the advertising uptake. I noticed depending on how active our leaders are in local chapters, marching orders from national tends to take a little longer to get to the masses at times.

  4) I’d like for maybe Dr. Mauer to plug our quiz or any of our initiatives on the Presidential release one month; I’m interested in developing a podcast of NFB fundraising PSA’s and such.

I suggest beginning the discussion of what our actual Cash and Caring goals can be for this year. We had a well-attended seminar, we put out the Tool Kit, we are promoting an online informational quiz, and now what’s next?

  Suggested Goals:

  1) Fine-tuning our network-increasing our committee to 25, representing a wide encompassing network of enthusiastic, innovative, hard-working, federationists that will carry out the mission statement of this committee-that is to promote, train, and support affiliates, chapters, and divisions help to raise money for the national movement.

  2) Set a $1000-2000 annual goal of raising money for the organization as a committee/team-Quiz has started us up with this, (if we can do this, then it’ll be easier for us to say we’ve all done it when we train/support/mentor others.)

  3) Set up subsequent events at National Convention and Washington Seminar to continue the preaching, teaching, and feasting on success.

  4) Gather information and resources to add to our Tool Kit

  5) Establish a few sub committees for example: executive/administrative/logistics-to handle events, /Public Relations-Tool Kit/web site/social media, and affiliate action-assigned members to track and cheer lead the fundraising progress of designated states/divisions...

  6) Perhaps try having a minimum of quarterly conference calls to create consistent communication across the network.

Well said, Mark. I think of the internal aspect as meaning that a website will not sell my information to a third party. We definitely want to use this information in our efforts to find more members and donors!

Additionally, I don’t want to be the Debbie Downer of the committee ; however…I am concerned that we are continuing to put forth effort on a great idea that didn’t pan out. How long will we keep the quiz up if we are having little success with it? At this point, a new quiz will not generate more participants nor more donations. Can we determine how many of the e-mails we already have in our database? That % will at least let us know if we are reaching participants other than our members.

  Friends,

I appreciate the honest dialogue here and think it is an extremely important one to consider. I am sorry I did not bring this up earlier. How we manage and effectively utilize data will be an important part of our future success. While there is more complexity than we can likely resolve via email, I want to just understand one think Mark said in his response.

  Mark wrote:

“Currently, when one takes the quiz, it says the email address "will be kept confidential". This expression is subject to interpretation. But when I see that expression on a website before deciding to give my email address, I expect that my email address will only be held internally.”

This website makes it very clear it is being run by the National Federation of the Blind. The profile is even called NFB Fundraising—in case someone was under the misconception that this was simply just public outreach and awareness. So, what does “internally” mean. Although my quick note was more to understand what the plan was, I did mention the newsletter as one possibility. I think the key however is ultimately getting this data set to be part of the NFB’s unified database “internally.” It may mean that this data is identified in a particular way. However, we should be examining this data to understand what impact the survey has had. For example, how many of these email addresses are already in our system? If it is only 10% we have done a fabulous job of connecting new contacts with our organization. If it is 90%, we know we have a better job to do. However, that also gives us data that we can use.

Most importantly, if we do not all agree that the “internally” is the National Federation of the Blind than I think we need to have a real serious discussion about what we are doing, who we are doing it for, and what organization is going to manage the data.

Let me also say this is not the only place this discussion is happening. In the last three months we ran into a similar discussion about data and who could use it—when it was clearly data of the National Federation of the Blind.

Thanks for continued engagement around these important issues. As I say, what we do with data is an extremely important thing for us to understand and plan for.

Currently, when one takes the quiz, it says the email address "will be kept confidential". This expression is subject to interpretation. But when I see that expression on a website before deciding to give my email address, I expect that my email address will only be held internally.

So I tend to agree with Loraine. However, we could change the wording on the quiz, of offer an opt in/opt out on the newsletter.

I do think the list of emails of people who have taken the quiz should be used to send an announcement when a new quiz is posted.

I believe We will be in the wrong and it will backfire on us if we
grab addresses and start subscriptions or anything else except give
the promised feedback on the quiz.

We can however offer a chance to opt in or opt out of stuff beyond the
Quiz Score email. We can use the addresses to offer a new quiz and
include the opt out option and the option to agree to the newsletter
  option.

  To increase donations, I suggest
  --we need a larger audience
--we need our audience to keep coming back because they enjoy our quizzes
--we need to experiment with wording and placement of the Ask button
--one way to get repeat customers is to build in ways to brag about one's score
--we can be happy that our online experiment worked, even if a small
amount this first time, and that we are on a learning curve.
