Auctions and raffles are two different things. An online raffle would be
easier and more doable, you just need to research state laws about
conducting raffles.

Raffles do not require bids. You just sell raffle tickets (hard-copy and/or
electronic) and at whatever deadline you set, a name is drawn. The winner
wins whatever item you have selected to raffle off.

With an auction, you have an item (or items) and bids are placed. When you
reach the cut-off, the highest bid wins.

Raffles do not require frequent updates on the progress because no one is
placing higher bids, they just purchase how ever many tickets they want for
whatever price is set per ticket.

Lots of affiliates and chapters and divisions conduct raffles annually and
sale tickets online. It's possible, you just need to find out what your
state's guidelines on raffles are.

In our state, we do not have to purchase a license or special permit to
conduct auctions, there's just certain items we cannot auction off without
special permits, like alcohol. But for raffles/lotteries, we have to
purchase a license from the Gaming and Gambling Commission, then we purchase
a special permit on top of this that excuses us from paying administrative
fees for raffles/lotteries.

Laws vary from state-to-state, but I advise researching this before
beginning anything.

Craig, the suggestion about state laws or requirements is valid. Some
states have quite a bit of leeway, however. I have no idea how well you
would do on Facebook. You would have to decide whether to display your items
separately or as a group. Then you would have to show how the bids are
progressing. And if all of your members on Facebook are going to recruit
their friends to bid, you have to make that easy.

I am proposing a raffle on Auction Frogs here in the spring. That is a
local company here with a lot of experience with nonproffit raffles. They
say you can hardly get too many items, and you want a variety of values.. I
am hoping to show the items for about 3 weeks and end at the time of our
state convention. We may save a few items for our banquet, but final bids
will be just before or just after the convention. Some of our members who
want to bid are not online, but of course, we want lots of bidders who are
not members, so we will try to make a balance. A lot depends on how many
ITEMSand how many friends you have on facebook. Of course, you have to make
arrangements for payment and shipping, too.

The state that did a daily drawing on youtube has some knowledge, but they
gave away cash. And they had to sell tickets ahead of time, so you are
proposing something different.

You remember that the national office did an auction for a couple of years.
It raised about ten thousand dollars, I think, but was quite a bit of work,
as well. I don't know who designed the online software. The first time for
something like that is always expensive.

If you do it, let us know how it goes! Thank you.

Subject: [Cash-and-caring] questions regarding conducting an online raffle

Greetings,
I am attempting to put together a "meet the blind" event for our local
chapter. We are trying to work with a local Walmart to hold this event and
sell 50/50 raffle tickets, as well. I would also like to sell tickets
online and use Facebook to promote the raffle.
If you have conducted online raffles, were they successful? Please share
any tips and suggestions.
I have seen affiliates using this web site:

http://ulwxastpyh.formstack.com

Is this the best site to use, to host this type of online raffle?
Thank you so much.
Craig Cooper
