Greetings to everyone:
This week we are focusing on H.R. 1175 – Blind Americans Back to Work Act. Please call your representative (Alma Adams, Mark Harris or Tim Moore) at Capital switchboard number 202 224 3121. Here is a potential script . My name is - fill in your name). I am asking you to cosponsor H. R. 1175. This bill would eliminate the earnings cliff currently experienced by blind Americans receiving SSDI and replace it with a $2 for $1 phase out . If a SSDI recipient earns $1 over the substantial gainful activity amount, which in 2026 will be $2,830, they lose all of their benefits which could amount to tens of thousands of dollars. This discourages blind Americans from seeking gainful employment. This bill would eliminate the earning cliff.
Thanks to everyone for your phone calls. If you have questions, please call me at 704-334-8758 which is my landline.
Sharon Newton
Legislative Chair
The National Federation of the Blind knows that blindness is not the characteristic that defines blind people or their future. Every day we raise the expectations of and for blind people, because low expectations create obstacles between blind people and our dreams. We can live the lives we want; blindness is not what holds us back.
