National Federation of the Blind of Cincinnati

Meeting Minutes for August 2016

1. The August 2016 meeting of the Cincinnati Chapter of the National
Federation of the Blind of Ohio was convened by Vice President Lisa Hall at
approximately 2:10 P.M. on Saturday August 27 2016 at the Washington
Platform Restaurant in Downtown Cincinnati. In attendance were: Lisa Hall,
Joy Thomas, Elif Emir Oksuz, David Perry, Christopher Sabine, Karren Innis,
Bill Innis and Paul Jordan. Deborah Kendrick, Chapter President and Emily
Pennington, Treasurer, were both absent from this month's meeting. Lisa Hall
collected $1 from members who were not clad at today's meeting. There were
no additional activities to introduce the meeting. David Perry moved to
accept the June Minutes as emailed; Paul Jordan seconded. The motion passed.

2. The Treasurer's Report for July was suspended, as Emily Pennington
was absent from today's meeting.

3. Christopher Sabine presented the report of the Membership
Committee, which met by telephone conference on Monday August 22 from 7:00
to 7:40 P.M. In attendance were: Dale Barta, Paul Dressell, Deborah
Kendrick, Walter Mitchell and Christopher Sabine. The primary topic
discussed was the Chapter Facebook Page. The Committee agreed to seek out a
sighted volunteer to serve as Co-administrator for the page, as Jessie
McDaniel, who initially took on this role, is no longer with the Federation.
Ideally, this person would come from the One-on-One Volunteer Services
Program at the Cincinnati Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired
(CABVI). Christopher reported that he has been in touch with Amy Scrivner,
Director of Community Relations at CABVI, regarding the Facebook Page and
other issues. He expressed that there is some question concerning CABVI's
ability to provide a one-on-one volunteer for this purpose. Deborah Kendrick
has also been in touch with Amy and other officials at CABVI. Christopher
was also able to reach out to a person in the special needs community on his
own who has agreed to take on the role of sighted administrator for the
page. It was agreed that Deanna Lewis, who has some vision, will take photos
of Chapter events and email them to Christopher. Christopher will send the
photos to the Co-administrator, who would help decide which pictures are
best and post to the Facebook Page. David Perry indicated that Amy Scrivner
is resigning her position at CABVI. However, he might know of someone
interested in taking on this role locally. Lisa Hall indicated that she is
working on affixing Braille labels to the membership cards from National
Office that Christopher handed out at the June meeting. These labels will
include each member's first initial and last name in Braille. She expressed
that she hopes to have these available by the September Chapter meeting.
Christopher offered to assist in any way he can. Christopher reported that
the visit to long time Federationist Marian King, who is currently unable to
attend Chapter meetings due to physical limitations, has been scheduled for
Monday August 29 at 2:15 P.M. at Marian King's apartment. This is a visit
that the Chapter has been in the works for a year but was postponed due to
Paul Dressell's illness. Paul and Bernie Dressell, Dale Barta and
Christopher Sabine will be making the visit. Christopher Sabine will be
organizing transportation for each person; Christopher expressed that his
mother has agreed to provide transportation. She is not interested in
compensation at this time. The Committee discussed publishing minutes from
the Cincinnati Chapter on NFB Newsline. Christopher reported that minutes of
all chapters of the American Council of the Blind of Ohio are available
through Newsline, whereas minutes from chapters of Ohio's NFB affiliates,
including the Cincinnati Chapter, are not. Christopher expressed that he
received word from Deborah Kendrick that Walter Mitchell is currently in
charge of publishing minutes to NFB Newsline and agreed to follow up with
Walter directly concerning this. Lisa reported that the next statewide board
meeting of the National Federation of the Blind of Ohio is scheduled for
Saturday September 17 2016 at the Holiday Inn Doubletree Hotel in
Independence, Ohio, the site of this year's state convention.

4. Christopher Sabine presented the report of the Recreation Committee
at the request of Annie McEachirn Carson; both Annie McEachirn Carson and
Kim McEachirn were absent from today's meeting. This report is included in
its entirety with these minutes as a separate attachment. The Recreation
Committee met by telephone conference on August 18 2016 from 7:00 to 8:10
PM. In attendance were: Kim McEachirn, Annie McEachirn Carson, Walter
Mitchell and Judy Rudick. The Committee reviewed all books read and
discussed by the Book club since its initial meeting in January 2016. The
Book Club last met on August 9, 2016 and discussed Thunder Dog: The True
Story of a Blind Man, His Gide Dog, and the Triumph of Trust at Ground Zero,
by Michael Hingson and Susy Flory. This book was selected by Deanna Lewis.
The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday September 20 at 7:00 P.M. The book
up for discussion will be Girl on a Train by Paula Hawkins and India Fisher,
selected by Annie McEachirn Carson. The Committee reviewed the possibility
of having a "dinner and a movie" night but decided this was not logistically
feasible at this time. Kim reported that he reached out to Deborah Kendrick
concerning organizing an event for White Cane Awareness Day, but has not
received a response as of this meeting. The Annual Convention of the
National Federation of Ohio is scheduled for November 11 to 13 2016 at the
Holiday in Doubletree Hotel in Independence, Ohio. All Chapter members were
encouraged to attend. Walter Mitchell reported that he is organizing and
hosting an event and fundraiser to celebrate the fourth anniversary of his
business with proceeds donated to the National Federation of the Blind of
Ohio. This event is scheduled for Saturday September 10 2016 from 1:00 to
4:30 PM at 10144 Chester Road in Woodlawn. Anyone interested in further
information about this event should call Walter Mitchell at (513) 334-9000.
Anyone with ideas concerning the Christmas Party, including plans and
locations, should contact Annie and Kim McEachirn by September 15 2016.
Finally, the Committee discussed long range plans, including participation
in the Black Family Reunion and the Braille Challenge scheduled for March
2017.

5. Lisa Hall expressed that she is on the organizing committee for
Ohio's Braille Challenge, a national event sponsored by the Braille
Institute of America to encourage Braille literacy in children. Braille
Challenges are organized in each state from December to March; Ohio's event
is reportedly slated for Friday March 3 2017 at the Clovernook Center in
Cincinnati; Jackie Conner from the Multi-State Center is in charge of this
event. Planning is in its early stages, and Lisa expressed that she believes
organizers will have a better idea of the numbers of children participating
by the end of November 2016. Lisa plans to disseminate brochures concerning
the Braille Challenge to parents of blind students and teachers of the
visually impaired as well as both the American Council of the Blind of Ohio
and National Federation of the Blind of Ohio Conventions. The American
Council of the Blind of Ohio will hold their convention from October 21 to
23 in Sandusky, Ohio. Information about Ohio's Braille Challenge is
currently on The Clovernook Center's Website and will be published in the
Fall 2016 newsletter of the State Library of Ohio. Plans are already in the
works for organizers to shuttle participants to the Clovernook Center by bus
the day before the event, though housing arrangements have not been
finalized.

6.      David Perry introduced a motion to adjourn this month's meeting;
Christopher Sabine seconded. The motion passed. The August 2016 meeting of
the Cincinnati Chapter of the National Federation of the Blind was adjourned
at approximately 2:40 P.M. on Saturday August 27 2016.

Respectfully Submitted,

Christopher Sabine
