Thanks, Diane. To answer your questions, both stuents are
totally blind and from Somalia. One is an NFB member, the other
just got introduced to the NFB. Both have contacts in the U.S.
that sspeak Somali. One needs advanced English, the other may
needs beginning English. Both are refugees, so there shouldn't
be a problem getting rehab to assist them with what Emily
Griffith won't. Also, Eddie, Diane may have said something good.

In reading your post, Beth, and in reading Eddie's post I think
Eddie has
covered the situation very well. As for rehab paying for English
grammar
classes for the two students you mention, unless Eddie knows
something I
don't know and he certainly could, I do not believe the students
you mention
would be eligible for rehab funding unless they are citizens.
Eddie's
suggestion of having a friend read and interpret the school
policies sounds
very reasonable to me. Do the students you speak of have
contacts in the
U.S. from their native countries? Their situation is difficult
to say the
least but not "unsolvable" but they would need help from someone
who speaks
their language and also knows English to help read and interpret.
However,
I do not believe that under the circumstances rehab can give them
any
assistance. I'll be interested to see what others think. Thanks
for the
interesting information. I hope you invited these two students
to come to
an NFB chapter meeting.
Diane

Hi, guys.
I've been asked to post the following statements on this list.
I thought
it would be appropriate to tell you guys about something that
happened to
one of our fellow CCB alumni while he was out downtown in
Denver. I was
talking to him, and he said clearly that there was a
discrimination issue
going on. I asked, "What discrimination isue?" He said that
the Emily
Griffith Opportunities/Vocational School was not able to provide
materials
for his advanced English classes. FYI: this ude is a refugee
from Somalia
and Kenya, and needs English skills to work in the workforce
effectively.
He and another potential CCB student also from Somalia are
doomed to fail
at Emily Griffith, and they may need to pay or use Rehab to pay
for
college classes in English grammar. I don't feel this is quite
right.
What do you guys think?
Beth
