[Colorado-talk] Folska in Post

It's not as simple as you think, Dan. While you and I have a lot of travel experience, there are many newly blinded folks who don't. I've been on every type of transport except two, a Navy sub and the Space Shuttle. Your experience may be similar. if I had lost my sight later in life, I might not have the confidence I do now in using the various travel options available. I had good instruction n and know there is nothing wrong with asking for help when needed or turning help down when unwanted. Some travelers either don't know what their options are or how to use them. I don't begrudge -blind folks asking for or accepting help if they need it. Beats the heck out of spending your life staying at home. I also realize that when someone offers to help that I need to not be?nasty about saying I don't need it. I figure that maybe I don't need it but there might be someone else who comes later who might and I don't want to discourage those who might be of assistance to avoid or ignore someone with a genuine need for travel assistance. We can rail agaqinst exercises like the ones the Girl Scouts were involved with. A better and more effective way to combat any negative stereotypes we face as blind people is to live our lives as part of the larger sighted world. If we travel independently and are more visible, such exercises as the one described in the article will have much less of an impact.

It's simple Jim. Such articles teach the sighted that blind people
never progress beyond the point that these Girl Scouts do in the
article. They already believe this ecause they've closed their eyes
and imagined how desperate and helpless they would be, and the article
confirms what they believe. In fact, the media continue to do these
stories because they believe it too.
