[Colorado-talk] Upcoming RTD Board Meetings

Dan,

Although I talked to you yesterday, I will answer your question for Colorado Talk.

Before one enters the room, they need to pass a table to your right. One signs in at the table. RTD Staff will take your name. The purpose for signing in is so your name appears in the minutes. They are good at asking if you also wish to speak. Just tell them you do. If the staff forgets since they often get busy, tell them you would like to speak.

How does one sign up in advance to speak! I looked at the calendar
page for the RTD Board, but didn't see anyting there.
Thanks,
Dan

Agreed that these new Mall busses pose a significant safety hazard to blind
pedestrians. I hope we are able to get a good turn out at the RTD meeting on
Tuesday. I would have loved to go but will unfortunately be out of town.

Thanks,

Cody

Ryan, thank you for sharing your story and if at all possible, please go
with Dan and Garry to the next Board meeting and tell the RTD Board Members
your story: how you got hurt and how they never responded.

Best,
Scott

With respect to the quiet shuttle issue, I was actually hit by one a few
months ago. I walked away from the encounter, but bruised my hand pretty
badly. I did Lodgin incident report with Rtd, but of course, never heard
back. It was very disconcerting, because I had absolutely no idea of the
shuttle was there until it slammed into me.

I think we need to take collective action on this issue before somebody
really does get severely injured or killed.

Gary and Joe -

Thanks for your vigilance on this matter. Electric (quiet) mall
shuttles are a concern of all of us. On the national level we got the
Pedestrian Safety Enhancement Act passed to require quiet vehicles to
emit sounds which make it clear that they are there, that they are
idling, accelerating or decelerating. Quiet shuttles deployed at this
time without auditory provisions are a threat to blind people, but
also to all pedestrians on the mall. It's frustrating that despite
Gary and Joe's presence and addressing this issue with rTD earlier,
they've still deployed these shuttles and don't know when they'll be
actually safe for blind and other pedestrians.

Gary has asked RTD's General Manager to ensure that the shuttles ring
their bells as they approach crosswalks, but this isn't actually
enough. The shuttles need to make appropriate sounds all the time.

I'm going to plan on coming to next Tuesday's meeting. I hope that
lots of other blind folks come along too. We clearly need to make the
point with the board of directors, who are the ones who call the
shots.

Best,
Dan

Joe, I listen for the shuttle to know when to cross the streets on the
mall.
If I can not hear them, I will have to concentrate on the other
traffic. Let us know what you find out. Thanks for doing this. Jim
