I received the below information from CDOT that can impact our family in Colorado Springs. The information below mentions closures on I-25 but does not directly indicate if there are impacts to traffic on South Academy Boulevard of Santa Fe Avenue.

― TRAFFIC ADVISORY ―
Week of Jan 3
Military Access, Mobility & Safety Improvement Project
Traffic shifts on I-25 and advance signing on South Academy Boulevard
begin January 3

Resulting in lane closures

COLORADO SPRINGS — Starting the week of January 3, Colorado Department of Transportation and Contractor SEMA Construction, Inc. will shift southbound I-25 over South Academy Boulevard (MP 135.2), southbound I-25 over Clover Ditch (MP 131.2), and southbound I-25 over Dry Wash (MP 128.34). The traffic shifts will vary from 7 to 12 feet toward the outside and will require a nighttime single lane closure. The traffic shifts in these three locations are to allow for crews to widen the bridge structures southbound over Clover Ditch (MP 131.2) and southbound I-25 over Dry Wash (MP 128.34) and begin the initial phases (demolition and reconstruction) of the I-25 bridges over South Academy. There will also be daytime shoulder closures on eastbound and westbound South Academy Boulevard and nighttime left lane closures on South Academy Boulevard. Motorists should plan for lane closures, lane shifts, and striping crews with possible traffic delays to prepare for the bridge work.
In addition, work will continue on I-25 along a 7.5-mile segment between South Academy Boulevard and extending to the Santa Fe Avenue exit (CO 85/75). Work will take place during evening and early morning hours, with lane closures on southbound I-25 to continue installation of permanent advance warning signs. Construction of northbound emergency pullouts (MP 129.6, 130.7, 132.7 and 133.7) with paving and barrier installation will require right lane closures on northbound I-25.

TRAFFIC IMPACTS

Southbound I-25 nighttime single lane closures and daytime shoulder closures and northbound I-25 nighttime right lane closures between approximately South Academy Boulevard and Santa Fe Avenue (Mile Point 135 - 127).

  *   Monday, Jan. 3 – Thursday, Jan. 6, nighttime work hours approximately 6 p.m. – 6 a.m.
  *   Friday, Jan. 7, nighttime work hours approximately 9 p.m. – 8 a.m.
  *   Monday, Jan. 3 – Friday, Jan. 7, daytime work hours approximately 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
  * Speed limit reduction to 55 MPH during construction hours
  *   Eleven-foot width restrictions

South Academy Boulevard near I-25 daytime right shoulder closures and left lane closures

  * Wednesday, Jan. 5 – Friday, Jan. 7, nighttime lane closure - work hours approximately
  *   8 p.m. – 4:30 a.m.
  *   Monday, Jan. 3 and Tuesday, Jan. 4 daytime shoulder closures - work hours approximately 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.

In the future, travelers can expect daytime and nighttime traffic impacts. Intermittent daytime and nighttime lane closures should be expected. Traffic fines will be doubled in the work zone. Motorists should slow down as they approach the work zones, drive with caution, allow extra space between vehicles, and give themselves extra travel time. Dates of work are weather permitting

This work is part of the Military Access, Mobility & Safety Improvement Project (MAMSIP). MAMSIP is comprised of four discrete road projects in the Pikes Peak region, all of which are strategically important in the movement of personnel and equipment between nationally significant military facilities.

Project Overview
Interstate-25 – Safety and efficiency improvements
The improvements to I-25 addressed in this project are located along an approximately 7.5-mile segment of the corridor beginning at South Academy Boulevard and extending to the Santa Fe Avenue (CO 85/87) exit at Fountain (MP 128), which exits to Gate 19 of Fort Carson.

  *   Replacement of two bridges crossing over South Academy Boulevard;
  *   Widening of both inside and outside shoulders and installing safety improvements;

  *   Concrete surface treatment overlay to provide an improved riding surface for this 7.5-mile segment;
  *   Installation of median barrier the entire length of this corridor;

  * Rehab and widening work on four bridges along the corridor, and

  * Installation of I-25 Southbound deceleration lane at the interchange with Colorado Highway 16.

Our approximately 3,000 employees work tirelessly to reduce the rate and severity of crashes and improve the safety of all modes of transportation. The department manages more than 23,000 lane miles of highway, more than 3,000 bridges and 35 mountain passes. CDOT also manages grant partnerships with a range of agencies, including metropolitan planning organizations, local governments and airports. It also operates Bustang, the state-owned interregional express bus service. Gov. Jared Polis has charged CDOT to further build on the state’s intermodal mobility options.

Remember: Slow For The Cone Zone
The following tips are to help you stay safe while traveling through maintenance and construction work zones.

  * Do not speed in work zones. Obey the posted speed limits.
  * Stay Alert! Expect the unexpected.
  * Watch for workers. Drive with caution.
  *   Don't change lanes unnecessarily.
  * Avoid using mobile devices such as phones while driving in work zones.
  * Turn on headlights so that workers and other drivers can see you.
  * Be especially alert at night while driving in work zones.
  * Expect delays, especially during peak travel times.
  * Allow ample space between you and the car in front of you.
  * Anticipate lane shifts and merge when directed to do so.
  *   Be patient!
