Pre-Construction activities continue for the 16th Street Mall Project

Short-term closures to portions of the sidewalks required

PCL Construction is currently doing pre-construction surveying and utility work for the 16th Street Mall Reconstruction project between Blake Street and Broadway. As part of the pre-construction activities, PCL will begin geotechnical boring. Beginning as soon as Monday, June 28, this work will require short-term closures to sidewalks and transitway at some locations along the 16th Street Mall.

   - Partial sidewalk closures will be in place for no longer than half a day. 
   - Business and sidewalk access will be maintained.
   - This particular work is expected to continue through mid-July.

To date, PCL has completed approximately 100 out of nearly 900 potholes and has completed potholing activities at three intersections (Blake, Lawrence, and Champa streets) and along three Mall blocks (Blake to Market; Lawrence to Arapahoe; and Champa to Stout). As a reminder, completing this early work will lessen the chance of encountering utilities during construction and is another integral step in the design of this project. 

PCL completed potholing activities at the Blake Street Intersection. 

What to expect as pre-construction activities continue

   - Work hours: Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.
   - Work is expected to impact up to two blocks per week.
   - One lane of traffic in each direction will remain open.
   - Expect alternating lane closures on the cross streets and transitway of the 16th Street Mall. Watch for signage and occasional flaggers.
   - There may be slight delays to the MallRide.
   - People's access to the 16th Street Mall will not be impacted.
   - All work is weather-dependent and subject to change. 
   - In observance of holidays and large City events, the project team strategically plans work to minimize impacts to those moving along the 16th Street Mall and riding RTD’s Free MallRide.
