[Three blind parents, one with a pumpkin on his shoulder, stand in the
pumpkin patch on a fall day with a small girl and a smaller boy holding a
red lollipop.]Peers can be powerful role models, providing critical keys to
learning in all of our programs. At the Colorado Center for the Blind, we
provide support and education to both parents who have blind children and
parents who are blind. It is critical for us to demystify blindness and let
parents know that their blind child will live a full exciting life. Our
blind parents share tips and tricks with each other about all the normal
parenting stuff, as well as great blind-parent hacks. And blind parents can
serve as both peers and potential role models for parents with a blind
child.
When a parent first learns that their child is blind, they may feel
devastated. Meeting positive blind adults can make all the difference.
Parents see blind parents with their own kids and they gain a whole new
understanding about what blind people really can do.
At the beginning of the year, parents wore learning shades in the kitchen
and were taught some cooking techniques from our blind parents. That way,
parents would learn these skills and know that they can be performed safely
without any vision because they’d done it themselves. They can feel
confident that they could teach their blind child these very skills that
are so important to building a sense of self-sufficiency.
This fall families went to the corn maze at Chatfield for a festive
afternoon together. Coming together and learning from each other is what we
do. The sighted and blind kids have great times playing and creating. We
will get together again on Saturday December 9 for our annual holiday
party. Lunch will be served. Blind Santa will be there with toys for the
kids. And we will celebrate the joy of giving within our community of
parents!
Colorado Gives Day [1] is Tuesday, Dec. 5. It’s Colorado’s biggest day
of giving. Your donation to the Colorado Center for the Blind [1] supports
programs such as our Youth Programs – which includes support for their
parents!
You can make an early donation [1] any time before next Tuesday, and your
gift will count toward qualifying us for the $1 Million Incentive Fund!
Please donate because community matters [1]!
And thank you in advance for believing in our students’ dreams!
