Happy new year! If you know of anyone who might like to become an audio describer but doesn't have any idea where to start, or what kind of description they might be able to do, I am offering a course concentrating on museums and galleries and other public venues. Please let folks know to contact me if they are interested. Thanks for your help. Here is the ad:
NEW YEAR – NEW COURSE: AUDIO DESCRIPTION FOR GALLERIES, MUSEUMS & INTERACTIVE CONTENT
Contact: bonniejbarlowdescription at gmail.com<mailto:bonniejbarlowdescription at gmail.com>.
For new audio describers, finding work writing audio description for television, streaming content, educational videos and films is difficult, especially if they don’t yet have the experience that companies are looking for. Getting work performing live description for plays can be difficult because it depends on what venues are in a person’s local region and whether they already have audio description at their performances. A prospective describer may live far from theaters that produce plays of general interest.
Fortunately, there are a lot of other work opportunities for audio describers. I always encourage my students to seek out unique projects. This gives them the opportunity to work in areas of specific interest. They can develop audio description for museums, art galleries, outdoor attractions, interactive experiences, nature trails and more. This can be done locally or remotely. They can also describe website videos and content for those clients.
In my new course I cover the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements to clarify very complicated legal language for describers and prospective clients. I address universal design and inclusive design. If institutions are applying for grants for accessibility, I can help provide them with the features they will need to highlight to provide audio description for their venues. I can also teach new describers how to write description for various types of venues and record description and edit videos.
$325 for four weeks, 90 minutes per week. This can be done individually or a group together for 3 or more at $300 each.
