Dear friends and colleagues,

We are behind schedule. We have not yet posted the Blind Coloradoan this year. We are all volunteers and its easy to fall behind. I apologize. But there are important things happening on behalf of people who are blind and low vision throughout the state of Colorado. I invite you to please read the brief items below and look for our more comprehensive Blind Coloradan in early April.


  1.  It's March Madness time! Each year our Mile High Chapter raises some funds by inviting each of you to try your luck. This is a fun fundraiser for only 20 bucks. Please consider doing it and sharing it.   2.  Open mic night! Our Denver Metro Chapter presents the 2nd annual open mic night. There is so much talent in them there hills! Fun! Joyful! Hilarious! Inspiring! Open Mic Night will be at the Colorado Center for the Blind, Littleton, Saturday evening April 6th. So, if you want to attend on April 6, in the form below give us your name, phone, email address, and how many guests besides yourself will come with you! Cost is $25 per person, which includes food, two drink tickets and eligibility for one 5-minute open mic appearance.   3.  Opportunity for those interested in guide dog matters. Sunday, March 24, 4 PM. There will be a gathering of the Colorado Association of Guide Dog Users. Whether you are a member, a student, or someone interested in issues and opportunities regarding guide dogs.   4.  NFBCO blind parents division organizing a family trip to the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. Parent of a blind child? Blind parents, grandparents, and siblings, this sounds like a fun day out for your family. The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo is recognized as one of this nation's great zoos.   5.  Calling all bakers! Blind or non-blind. If you are a baker you will want to participate in the Wild West Chapter Bake Off! If you are a taster you will definitely want to come to this event. It will take place April 20th Time: 2:00 PM to 4:30 PM Location: Brewability Address: 3445 S. Broadway, Englewood, CO 80113 Here's the scoop on registration and payment: Registration: - All aspiring bakers must register and pay by April 13th. - To throw your hat in the baking ring, shoot an email to Charis at cglatthar at gmail.com. - Don't forget to include your name, contact info, and the tantalizing treats you'll be whipping up.   6.  New opportunities to participate in National Federation of the Blind in EL Paso County. Currently, the Olympic City Chapter meets on the second Saturday of each month at 10 am. For info contact the president Jeanette Fortin nettiecosp at icloud.com<mailto:nettiecosp at icloud.com>. The chapter often goes to lunch following the meeting. A great place to connect to other blind people in our community.

Starting in April NFBCO will be offering an additional opportunity for the blind and low vision community of El Paso County to listen, learn, teach, and join NFBCO. We will be organizing a second chapter in our area. Stay tuned for information about the formation of a Downtown COS Chapter of the National Federation of the Blind of Colorado. The chapter will meet on a weekday evening downtown. Complete details coming soon!

  1.  NFBCO legislative agenda is on NFB Newsline. Check out our Colorado Channel for more information. Our legislative effort is also detailed at nfbco.org. This is also where you can find the resolutions from the 2023 state convention. The policy statements drive our legislative efforts on behalf of people who are blind and low vision across our state. You will be happy to know that our prescription labeling bill has already passed, unanimously out of its first House Committee. Our NFB Newsline and Project Literacy funding initiative championed by Senator Jesse Danielson is also moving forward.   2.  Colorado Center for the Blind summer programs. For more than 3 decades our CCB has offered a variety of learning experiences for blind and low vision youth. There are often excellent learning and employment opportunities to support these kiddos throughout the summer for young adults. Contact Chaz for complete details.
  3.  NFBCO congratulates Tera Spangler. She has recently been hired to be the superintendent of the Colorado School for the Deaf and the Blind. For almost 2 decades Superintendent Spangler has provided leadership for CSDB. After a thorough search a vetting process the CSDB Board selected Superintendent Spangler. We, NFBCO believe that this selection will provide the school with excellent leadership, community engagement, and innovative management for years to come.
