I think that typically there’s no cost. But there’s no hard and fast rule. I mean, nonprofits, universities, companies, individuals can manage the rollout and or testing of their products anywhere they want. If they can get somebody to throw in 50 bucks. Good on them.

Hi Tim, thanks for sharing this with your thoughts. From where I sit, the company should be paying the user for their time and feedback. Not just 50 day $50 for two weeks but maybe $50 a day.

Hi there,
I’m curious what other people think of this. To me, a $50 fee to help beta test a device for two weeks sounds excessive.
Has anyone participated in this or otherwise dealt with this organization? I, and I suspect many others, would love your thoughts.
Thanks,
Tim

Subject: HapWare: Beta Test Program
Hello Tim,
I hope you're doing well! My name is Chaya O'Grady, and I am a student at the University of Colorado, Boulder, Leeds School of Business. I am the VP of Marketing for the startup HapWare, pioneering assistive technology for individuals who are blind and low-vision. You expressed interest in beta testing our product, ALeye (haptic wristband and AI-powered glasses), through the National Federation of the Blind. As we continue to improve our technology, we’re looking to have more discussions.
We’d love the opportunity to have a conversation, learn from your experiences, and tell you about the beta test program. These insights are invaluable in ensuring we stay true to our “Nothing about us, without us” approach to design. We are launching a beta program and are looking for individuals who can apply the HET in social environments. The beta test will last 2 weeks and during this time you will have the opportunity to be part of the development process. You get to provide feedback and brainstorm with engineers from the HapWare team. You are expected to use the device during your normal work activities, provide feedback on your experience, and suggest improvements.
There is a nominal $50 fee for using the device and being part of the development process. Grants are available to cover this fee for those who qualify.
Spots are filling up quickly and we want you to be a part of the program!
Are you available to answer a couple of questions?
Best,
Chaya O'Grady
HapWare
VP of Marketing
