Through our Portrait of Colorado at 150 Storytelling Initiative, we will work with individuals and communities to document, preserve, and share some of the histories and experiences of Coloradans.

How can we work together? Our team is here to provide you with information, guidance, and support as you plan and carry out oral history collecting projects. Perhaps you are already working with your family, club, organization, or neighborhood to collect stories – we would love to know about it!

We acknowledge that the land currently known as Colorado has been the traditional homelands of Indigenous peoples since time immemorial. We are grateful to work in partnership with the 51 sovereign nations who continue to call this land home. Together, we plan exhibits; collect, preserve, and interpret artifacts; do archaeological work; and create educational programs to share the history of Colorado.

Under the Colorado Open Records Act (CORA), all messages sent by or to me on this state-owned account may be subject to public disclosure.

Both Sarah Metsch and I are volunteering to locate the many persons who were instrumental in the disability rights movement over the years. Such individuals would include those leaders and 'foot soldiers' who helped make systemic changes promoting the rights of persons with disabilities. Many of these individuals worked through one of the myriad of organizations providing an array of services to persons with disabilities. Also, there were individuals with disabilities that were role models who were out and about our State helping and mentoring less fortunate persons with disabilities to share in the joys and responsibilities of community activities. I personally have identified about 70 individuals I have known, as early as 1972 to the present, who were icons in the disability rights movement. I am hoping to contact those who are living and to also pay homage to those that have died. I am contacting you to see if you would like to tell your story regarding your role in the disability community of Colorado. Should you be interested, I would li recoomend you contact Kim Kennedy-White.

at kim.kennedy-white at state.co.us <mailto:kim.kennedy-white at state.co.us> Also if you could spread the word about the storytelling initiative to a person or persons who you believe have made contributions to the disability community, please see if they would be interested in telling their story.

Apart from those persons with and without disabilities that worked to make significant changes in the disability rights movement there were persons who helped support those disabled activists. These would be home health attendants, sign language interpreters, special and regular educators, doctors, nurses, OT's, PT's, Speech Therapists, counselors, rehab engineers, attorneys, supportive family members, etc., etc. Those individuals could be woven into your story.
