Response, Recovery Efforts Following
 Disasters

This week, FEMA and CNCS announced an innovative new partnership
designed to continue
to strengthen the nation's ability to respond to and recover from
disasters while
expanding career opportunities for young people. FEMA Corps is a
historic collaboration
which will create a new unit of AmeriCorps' National Civilian Community
Corps (NCCC)
whose members will be devoted solely to FEMA disaster response, and
recovery efforts.
The five-year agreement provides for a full service corps of 1,600
members annually.
Once trained by FEMA and CNCS, members will provide support in areas
ranging from
working directly with disaster survivors to supporting disaster
recovering centers
to sharing valuable disaster preparedness and mitigation information
with the public.
The first members will begin serving in August 2012 and the program
will reach full
capacity within 18 months. Learn more: http://bit.ly/GOQXoF

Everyday Young Heroes

Dominic Oetinger
Barrington, IL

YSA recognizes ten year old Dominic Oetinger as an Everyday Young Hero
for his work
to engage his community in a fundraiser for a little girl suffering
from severe
burns.

After learning from a local volunteer in Barrington about a little girl
suffering
from severe burns and living in an Indian slum, Dominic decided to
organize a fundraiser
to raise money for her treatment and education. Working alongside the
school leadership
and local community partners, Dominic organized the Chess Without
Borders fundraiser
which included a chess tournament, live auction, local entertainment,
and food sales,
with all proceeds going to the fund. Dominic worked with local
businesses and community
members to recruit a team of volunteers to recruit chess players for
the tournament,
solicit food and items to be auctioned, assist as tournament directors,
recruit
local artists, and reach out to the local media. The Hough School
Chess Tournament
engaged 100 students and 150 community members, and the fundraiser
raised $5,027
under Dominic's leadership. The funds will cover medical expenses and
two years
of school for the little girl in India, and Dominic's spirit of giving
encouraged
other students to support this project. For example, a seven year old
student held
a Photographic Exhibition about this event with pride and others
students sent their
second hand clothes to India for this little girl and other children
living in the
slums.

For his dedication to ensuring that a little girl in need has a chance
at a future,
and for engaging his school and community in every step of his project,
we honor
Dominic as an Everyday Young Hero.

To nominate a young person who has improved their community through
service to be
recognized as an Everyday Young Hero, please visit
www.ysa.org/awards/hero.

Building a Grad Nation 2012 Report

The 2012 report update of Building a Grad Nation: Progress and
Challenge in Ending
the High School Dropout Epidemic, released March 19 by the Alliance for
Excellent
Education, America's Promise Alliance, Civic Enterprises, and the
Everyone Graduates
Center at Johns Hopkins University, shows that the nation continues to
make progress,
with more than half of states increasing graduation rates. The report
also reveals
that the number of "dropout factory" high schools - those graduating 60
percent
or fewer students on time - decreased by 457 between 2002 and 2010,
with the rate
of decline accelerating since 2008. Read the report at

hear this message, wherever you stand
I'm calling every woman, calling every man
We're the generation
We can't afford to wait
The future started yesterday and we're already late
...
I searched for a leader
But the leader was me
We were looking for the world to change
...
If you're ready we can shake the world
Believe again
It starts within
We don't have to wait for destiny
We should be the change that we want to see."
