> Dear Colleagues and Communicators,
> What an amazing week for national service! From the White House to West Virginia, service was in the spotlight.
> On Monday, President Obama welcomed President George H.W. Bush to the White House to celebrate his lifetime of public service and leadership in volunteerism. The President announced a new National Service Task Force to identify additional ways that the public and private sectors can partner to support national service and volunteering. This task force is a huge vote of confidence in our mission, and provides a unique opportunity to expand service opportunities in America.
> On Wednesday, we announced of the first round of School Turnaround AmeriCorps grants. These grants will bring 650 new AmeriCorps members into some of our lowest-performing schools this fall, where they will work to boost student academic achievement, attendance, and high school graduation rates. This partnership between CNCS and the Department of Education is a perfect example of the kind of collaboration the new task force is seeking to expand.
> Today, CNCS CEO Wendy Spencer is in West Virginia for a truly extraordinary service project. In conjunction with the Citizens Conservation Corps of West Virginia and the National Boy Scout Jamboree, more than 40,000 volunteers are carrying out 350 service projects across nine southern West Virginia counties this week. National service is playing a key organizing role – with 14 AmeriCorps NCCC teams, other AmeriCorps and AmeriCorps VISTA programs, and RSVP all pitching in. It’s a shining example of how service gets things done and brings people together.

> In addition, AmeriCorps NCCC teams, which included Delta 2 from the Southern Region and Raven 2 from the Atlantic region, moved to Summersville to begin work with the Boy Scouts during the initiative. Currently there are two projects the teams are focusing on — one at the Wilderness Volunteer Fire Department and the other renovating the Dining Hall at the Veterans Memorial Park. “For the teams, the work is exiting, fun and provides a great learning opportunity in one of our nation’s most beautiful areas,” explained Trey Collins, media representative with Delta 2. “Our team is here for three weeks helping out with the initiative. We commit 10 months of our lives to community service and we’re glad to be of help any way we can.”

> The Miami Herald (FL), July 16, 2013
> Ramos is one of 157 Miami-Dade volunteers with the Senior Companion Program, a national service that is part of the federal Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS). Most counties in Florida offer the same service, sometimes under another name. Formed four decades ago — along with Foster Grandparents and other service programs — Senior Companion pairs healthy older adults with their less abled peers to provide a variety of services, from help with grooming to assistance at the grocery store.

> America's Commitment to Volunteerism and Service
> Serve.gov, July 16, 2013
> While he didn't originate the notion of helping our fellow man, he reasserted it as a national priority and insisted that "there can be no definition of a successful life that does not include service to others." President Obama built on this commitment to service when he signed the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act in 2009, which will increase the size of AmeriCorps from 75,000 volunteers to 250,000 by 2017. In 2012, the President created the FEMA Corps program, which established a FEMA-dedicated unit of AmeriCorps members to work solely on disaster preparedness, response, and recovery efforts -- and he launched the Serve.gov platform to make it easier for Americans to find and post local volunteer opportunities.
