[Community-service] How to find an opportunity

Hi all,
 I’ve  noticed this list has gotten a little  quiet as of late, so  I figured it was time to change it a little.
 
 One of the biggest questions that seems to come up is  mostly about how to find a volunteer opportunity in one’s local area. In the experience of the folks on this list,  what have you found worked for you?
 Was there a website? App, Facebook group,twitter account, hotline, person you know, etc?
 what advice do you have? words of  wisdom do you have to share?
