When it comes to  CPR, it does take all day. We did it at work and they
adjusted due to my blindness. There were no videos and the instructor really
spent time  deciding what he needed to do to make sure I was included and
understood. We did mostly hands on. That is what took up all the time. We
worked in pairs and he had 12 dummies. We did adults in the morning and
children in the afternoon.

Hi all,

I like all ideas. for those of us not at convention, I hope your meeting is 
recorded. For speakers, I like the ideas about Americorps participants.
For learning about service and safety, having a red cross speaker  speak on 
disaster preparedness and / or conducting a first aid workshop is a great 
idea. Too often, it is thought we cannot help out in emergency or disaster 
situations. With the training and resources to help, we can act on it and 
disspell those myths.

I like the idea of a kit as a service project; its easy to do and some 
activity one can simply drop in to help out, so if one cannot commit a long 
time, if they have, say 20 minutes, they can contribute something. Also, I 
believe certifications are national and scope; they expire after two years. 
If you all do decide to host a cpr or first aid workshop, just make sure the

red cross staff are aware of how to teach the class; it has to be hands on 
and descriptive; usually, they demonstrate up front and then people 
practice. Having not taken a class, I'm not sure how its run, but I heard 
they typically show videos as well; now if the videos are informational and 
auditory, its fine, but if not, you need an alternative way to learn the 
material.
Also you all will need a lot of time for that. At least around here, a CPR 
workshop for adult cpr takes about 3 hours and to do infant, child and adult

cpr, it takes 5 or 6 hours.

I also really like the idea of putting some kind of kits together as a 
project at the convention.

I would also like to ask those of you who do this already in your chapters 
or affiliates to please email me lists of items you include in whatever kit 
you are making. I want to add materials like this to our resource bank to 
help other people do these kinds of projects.
